When painting your brake callipers do you do the pad as well? I did mine on my au and did just the calliper its self. Iv seen a few other people do it and do the pad as well I was wondering which way it surpose to be painted/not painted pad?
Hopefully iv done it the right way, I wonder if there is a disadvantage in painting the pad. Oh did it a about 2 months ago time to go check how the paint has held (have steel wheels) and yes i need mags. |

I take the pads out to do mine, the more detail you get on the calipers if you dont just throw paint on with the calipers and pads still attached to the disc

I wouldn't want to do the calipers -- you might get crap through the rotor as it wears.
Anyway, pads look crap coloured IMO :P

I pulled my calipers off the rotor, removed the pads and painted the caliper only, not the pads. They are consumable, so I choose to leave them black.
Mind you masking up your rotors to spray the hubs and outer edges is a time consuming task!

sup I pulled them off n' painted the calipers and tops of pads for no real reason but to looked neater .. lol .. the discs I just cut a rough curve in a bit of cardboard and held that round the edge as I sprayed then just cleaned up the little overspray with some thinner on a rag ..
worked neat but now I got a little surface rust on the discs from sitting around :( |

I did mine on the XR6 but didnt do the pads, looks much better with just the calliper painted IMO. I did all the painting on the car, just masked off all surrounding areas and the pads.

Under no circumstances should you paint the pad itself. This reminds me of that thread on the VW forums or whatever when they were laughing at the guy who painted absolutely everything.

But why not paint the pad what problems does it cause?
I saw the vw one but he painted the disc. Iv only painted the callipers on mine but im just wondering why so many people paint the pads. |

Is that a serious question?? Pads are too important to mess with.

Painting the back of the pad will not affect it.

I've heard you have to use a special paint to prevent it from burning/melting away from the heat.

They do sell special caliper paint, but its not needed.
If you prep them properly and use Enamal paint it will work fine. Mine has stood up to track work and alot of hard driving.

What sort of prep is needed to paint the calipers?
Would you just scrub them with a hard brush and use some degreaser? |

A few weeks ago there was a seminar that vic roads held and in part of it they said that YES you can paint your brake callipers BUT you CANNOT paint the top where the FINs are as they are designed to rid your brake callipers of Heat..
now take your callipers off clean them anyway you can and paint them take your time as the better you clean them and the more even coat of paint you put on them the better they will look |
