That is amazing, I've got a friend who is in his 70s and was heavily involved in our manufacturing industry all throughout his life.
I'm going to show him this tomorrow, he'll really like this. Thanks for that. Man, I hope this happens in the next 30 years. OH CRAP I LEFT MY $100 SNAPON SPANNER IN THAT CUSTOMERS CAR! No worries, I'll print out another I scanned earlier  Imagine the possibilities. |

A similar technology is used for rapid prototyping, where intersecting lasers melt and reform a powder, layer by layer, like the printers in the video, until a whole object is made. It has also been used in the medical industry by surgeons who use MRI scans (or CAT scans, I don't really know which one) to build models of the parts they will be operating on so they can see it from all angles, and even practice delicate steps without cutting into the patient.
The deisgn and technology teachers at my school had a scale model of a patient's skull that had been used to help a surgical team. It was pretty amazing. The next step will be producing objects out of stronger and more useful materials (like making an exact copy of a tool out of metal). |

Yeah, I've been watching this for a while. This is awesome stuff! I can picture Geelong as a manufacturing centre once more: thousands of individual CNC machines and 3D printers in separate independent small businesses creating inexpensive, high tolerance parts, machines, toys, what ever you wish. Ever cheaper, just like the old Model T. No labour costs. Let me at it!
