Default MC Mondeo TDCi Engine Malfuntion warning

Hi all
my wife's MC Zetec diesel (Dec2010, 115k kms) has had an engine malfunction message come up on the dash display a few times, and the orange/yellow engine warning light come on as well. The car seems to run fine and the warning goes away after a while. Anyone know what can cause it? I saw another thread that said it could be related to a fuel vapouriser or DPF issue, but wondered if it might be a generic error message that applies to other problems as well...??
I read that any OBDII scanner can work with the Mondeo, so I bought one off ebay but not sure if that will help in diagnosing the issue. I won't receive it for a few days anyway.
any tips?
thanks
Geoff

It could be anything Geoff so seeing if there are any codes is the first logical step.
That OBD scanner looks interesting. Let us know how it goes.

The OBD scanner was insanely easy to connect and retrieve the fault code.
Result is:
P2463 - Generic
Type - Powertrain - Auxiliary Emission Controls - ISO/SAE Controlled
Description - Diesel Particulate Filter Restriction - Soot Accumulation

Searching the web for that P2463 code brings up a few sites that suggest the car won't do its own regen of the DPF after that fault code comes on and it will need to go to a dealer. Anyone know if that applies to the Mondeo? The engine light and warning isn't coming up at the moment, but not sure if that means the fault has cleared itself or not??

G'day Geoff,

From memory mine gave a similar warning about a year ago so I took it to the dealer. They said it was accumulation in the DPF & manually cleared it for me.
They also suggested I take the vehicle for about a twenty minute run at high speed (100kph) once a month to make sure it regenerates itself. This I have pretty much done since & no more engine malfunction messages.
At least to date.

Apologies for asking a seemingly stupid question, but whereabouts do you connect in the OBD scanner?

The OBD port is under a flap, behind a cover, under the dash to the right of the steering wheel. I went to Google, searched Mondeo OBD port location, and it gave a few youtube vids showing the spot

I've booked the car in at the dealer next week week for a manual DPF regeneration (or whatever the correct term is)

My wife just had a call from the dealer to say it's a faulty sensor. They've ordered the part from Perth and we'll get the car back tomorrow minus $480
