My XP with a 250 pre-crossflow runs a little hot. It still has the original XP radiator. What is the answer? Bigger radiator? If so what and how?

A good cooling system flush would be the first step, as well as checking thermostat and water pump impeller.

Thanks. I have flushed the radiator, replaced the water pump, thermostat and radiator cap. I guess I need to take out the radiator and take it to a radiator shop for a proper clean out.

have you considered thermo fans? xccobra77 has au fans in his xc. a quick bit of hacking and sawing and we had 'em in in one arvo. didn't cost much then just got someone to wire up an adjustable thermo switch to modulate how soon the fans come on.
otherwise if your after originality get the radiator flushed out and checked properly.

OK, radiator out after work tomorrow, off to the rad shop. Have already fitted 14" thermo as no room for fan on water pump.

I had a V8 radiator and a thermo in the XP I recently sold, it would still overheat when idling for too long. 221ci motor. My other XP that had a 250 in it was a nightmare for overheating.

Well, radiator renovation complete. We now have a cool XP. Won't go over 180 degrees now. Next job is to get rid of the 4.11 diff and replace it with the correct 3.23

Radiator Doctor in Hervey Bay took the top tank off and stuck rods through the core. The guy said it was very blocked. They pressure tested, resprayed and only charged me $88. A bargain!

excellant, glad to hear a good result. the price seems to be very reasonable for what was done too.

Replacing the 4.11 diff with a 3.23 this weekend. Should go better and save some fuel!

The diff change will be excellent. You'll just have to give up your drag racing career...
My car struggles in the heat while doing lots of idling. I had it at the local radiator place and they basically told me to stop being such a sissy. That, and that 90 degrees C on the guage was actually 75 degrees at the radiator... Cheers

Can the 5 stud XP ute shafts fit into an XP sedan diff? Reason is I have 5 stud allround, but the 4.11 ute diff is too high. I want a sedan diff but want to keep the 5 stud.
I have discovered that XR-XY diffs are too wide (expensive mistake). So now have an XY diff for sale too!

Alternatively, a centura diff fits, you will just need different size wheel nuts.

Well, here goes. My XP sedan has an XP ute diff and hubs alround, hence 5 stud. Diff is 4.11, too steep for country driving. Difflap in Brisbane said they had a 3.23 gear set for it. They pulled mine apart to find mine has a long spline (ofcourse theirs was short spline). So I tracked down another diff in Gladstone, friend picked it up brought it to Hervey Bay. Took it to Difflap to move the 5 stud axles into it. Trouble is the backing plates have a different stud pattern. So, take the 3.23 gear set out of the donor diff and put then into the original ute diff. Luck would have it that the donor diff is long spline.
So, who know about this short/long spline thing? When did Ford change? Boy, talk about a lot of mucking around and money! As Greg said if it was cheap and easy, everyone would do it! Merry Christmas All........

The 14" x 8" 12 slotters only just fit under the rear guards. In fact they rub a little on the guards when you corner. What is the most effective way of moving the guards out, say 1"?

you can get the guards rolled by a panel beater. basically they use a tool which attaches to your hub on one end and an adjustable skateboard wheel on the other to gently massage out the guard.

Yes, they'll massage the inner guards out for the princely payment of a carton of XXXX Gold!

Have found it still over heats but not as much as before. I am putting in an XY radiator, after all, thats what went with the 250 motor. Can put in an XP type aluminium for around $1000, an XY for around $400. Found a good one on ebay for $100 inc freight. Just have to get handy with a jig saw. Oh well, more skills to learn!

Pialba Smash Repairs did the guards. They have cracked the paint a little, but they warned me this could happen.
Now to replace the clutch as it is starting to slip. Apart from that the car is going realyy well as I replaced the timing chain and harmonic balancer.

Radiator is great. Engine runs at about 180 around town, gets up to 200 on the highway at 100kph. I haven't cut the shroud yet, but that will improve it further. I found changing the timing chain helped as now its timed properly.
