Default MKII close ratio box - problems!!

Hi All,

Well its been a few months since I bought my 78 MKII Rally Pack (to be confirmed). The gearbox is starting to play up. I cant seem to push it into 1st gear if the car is moving. Basically has to be almost stationary before it finally pops in.

It has 71WG7006AC stamped on the box which I know is the code for an RS2000 close ratio box - hence slightly adding to my confidence that it is an original rally pack :hihi: .

After studying the service manual i think the problem is to do with the synchro setup. Is it possible to replace syncro setup (ring etc) from a regular 4spd or can I buy these somewhere. I remember seeing some new ones on eBay a while back but never since. Alternatively I could put in a replacement box however i am finding it hard to find one in Adelaide.

Wow thats a long post. Any help much appreciated. My sick baby is making me sad!!

from information i've gathered the gearboxes were never close ratio (even on the rs2000) and infact employed the use of a spacer on the shifter to simulate a short throw.

if this is the case, any parts from a 4sp box from an escort of that era would be interchangable.

yeh the only close ratio boxes were the twin cam mk1 escorts and the rs only had a short shifter so u should be able to use any 4 escort 4 speed parts or just buy a nother gear box if u want 1 let me know ok thanks

Thanks for your help. I guess that makes it easier to source a replacement. I think I'll just look for a replacement box, bad_mk1_escort what have you got on offer?

hi
I'd try adjusting your clutch cable first, its easier and cheaper than another gearbox! According to the glovebox manual, you should be able to put it into first gear at any speed below 30kph.
cheers fjw
