Hi guys,
Just wondering what nm everyone does their AU wheel nuts up to when changing wheels over with a torque wrench.

i always used a socket attached to a breaker bar and pulled up on the nuts in a star pattern
with the rattle gun it should be set on 3 that's what i was told when i was working at a tyre joint many moons ago but these days it's all gun ho cheers Dean |

I do mine with a torque wrench. I think what I found surprising when I first did this was how little effort was involved with 125nm (using a 450mm handle).
There was no doubt I would have been over torquing the nuts with the wheel brace or ratchet in the past. |

^ the above is correct, but its funny when how over tightening brings in a range of issues including reducing the clamping effectiveness off the fastener.

My measure has always been 'how tight can I have them whilst still being able to take them off at midnight in the rain on the side of the highway with the horrible flimsy factory fold-up wrench and only light from the passing kenworths'.

also ford recommended it to help stopping with disc warping , i do mine to 130nm

Rattle gun here only so my missus can get them undone with one of those 12v impact wrench rattle guns if she gets a flat. If they're too tight like they are when they come back from the tyre fitters, then the impact gun won't undo them. I've never had one come loose yet.

bloody hell some of these impact guns do them up tight, i had to change a hot wire style wheel on the back of my xc ute years ago, it was done up so tight my star wheel brace became like twisted pasta, all 5 where as tight as the first, i won out in the end.

My issue with rattle guns is that I once had a tyre shop actually leave my lugs loose 'cause they didn't have the correct setting on the gun.
As the old saying goes, if you want it done right you do it yourself. So even after a tyre shop refits my rims, I'll always check them myself with a star iron before I drive off. IT'S MY *** ON THE LINE WHEN I DRIVE OFF!!! |

mine are done pretty much exactly all the same.
reef up with the bar till tight, then a smigden more without trying to hard. hope this helps. (no issues regarding warping or braking problems to date?) |
