well the $$ for good condition EF/EL XR indicators is slowly rising

Yep, a legacy of no aftermarket options, plus 2nd hand ones will have faded reflectors,
and crazing/cracks in the clear outer. I used to collect smashed ones from wreckers (usually free), rework the std EF/EL outer clear lens to fit, chrome spray the reflector surfaces. Fair bit of work, but much cheaper. Genuine is top, fake is bottom.
