Default Do you overtake Police Car's?

After a recent pain in the bum experience today with 2 ego's in uniform, I thought I'd see who overtake's Police Car's. If all things are normal at the time and I'm on the legal limit, I am happy to pass them. I've done it a million times. I have some friends who say they would never overtake a cop which I don't get??

Here's the story behind my query:

Cop Pulled Me Over......

obviously dont go out of my way, nailing the engine to pass one, but if you're going along in traffic and they happen to be going slightly slower than you,........ or (as happened on the way back from adelaide not long ago) they happen to virtually pull up on a highway then i'll boot it around......but only in a mates car "jk d4v3"

I always used to think twice when in the NT. Then drop it back a gear, and float past at 140!!! That is the only time I have ever overtaken a copper.
If I was doing 110, and they were doing 80-90, then I would pull out and maintain my speed. Hard to do in a Highway situation, unless its long and flat, but on motorway, no real drama's.

Of course I do.

I bet they get annoyed when they are driving around slowly on patrol in the left lane with no cars in front of them and there are heaps behind, none willing to pass. I would think it to be a humourous sight. What would be worst is people that slow down under the speed limit when a police car is behind them.

Just a thought......... :evil3:

If one were to go past break neck speed, sideways, perhaps. I also think that the cars that slow down when they approach police cars, refuse to pass, especially at night, would be the ones that grab their attention.

I don't really know if anyone else has this feeling but it is that typical 'school kid' feeling..
You know you haven't done anything wrong but you are sure as heck they are going to think you have so you end up doing something stupid (like slowing down to a stupid speed)...

It is the nerves thing... I am slowly getting better but now since I don't seem to get that nerve thing happening I have been pulled over several times.. Go Figure..

Nah if im on the motorway and i can overtake them without speeding i will, as long as your not doing anything wrong there shouldn't be a problem and if they think it is a problem then they will have to prove it.

If all the planets are aligned (ie - enough room under the limit & safe to do), I pass them on any two lane or more road. I can't say I've pulled out on a single lane road an overtaken one though.

i won't do it cause i'm driving a not so roadworthy car at the moment while mine is getting modified.

but 1 time on me way home at about 11.30pm i was doin 110km/h and i thought i saw flashing lights in the back ground. i kept driving and was cruising along a 5km straight. just as i got to the end the cop car was on me *** and pulling out into the right lane. only thing is the highway got really twisty so he couldn't overtake. anyway i thought i'de help him out and sped up to 120km/h to get to the next overtaking spot which was about 5 mins away. by the time i got there i was doing probably 130km/h and he just flashed his lights and overtook me . turns out a car sped away from the cops, hit a kerb at about 110km/h, flipped and burst into flames.

yeh i over take if they are under the speed limit. Once i was driving from Gosford to sydney and every one is doing 120 like usual in NSW. when all of a suddend everyone slows down to 90. about 20 cars ahead was a cop car doing 90 and some chicken sht was blocking the right lane to scarred to pass. Then final the cop takes an exit and everyones back to 120 :S . some stupid people around.

I think it depends on your situation.
If your car is modifed and potentially defectable then its a definate no.
I also think the older you get the more relaxed you become in this type of situation.
I recently overtook a Fire Truck with lights flashing, no sirens. The truck was going up an extended hill, flat out at 55kph in a 80 zone. There were no side roads and it was a dual carriage way.
As long as your not breaking the law Id say go for it.

yes, no problems as long as the previously mentioned safety and speed issues are in hand.

I pulled up to the lights next to the coppers near home and just gave da pannie a rinse and a bit of water flowed down the windscreen like it normally does on pannies and the cop was at the lights trying to argue with me that i got a cracked windscreen. Another thing i just got my car done and the guy who did it is a full on ford nut and was driving back from NSW in an ex police car hes mate *a copper* had and got the speedo done b4 he left and all checked out, then the Vic police pulled him over for doin 115 in a 100 zone when he was spot on 100.

lol, what a golden moment! Sif we'd boot it past a cop car :

Then again he was doing 80 along a deserted highway & pulled over rather quickly. No choice but to go around him really.

If there was an overtaking lane on a higway, I would pass them, just on cruise control, but otherwise, I don't think I would tempt fate.

Here in canberra though, I'm lucky if i see a cop car once a week (while I'm driving)... but you know Murphy's law: They are never around when you need them, but they are always around when you don't!....

I've overtaken them on dual-carrageways. Never had the opportunity to safely overtake a copper at the speed limit on a single laned road. (Pretty windy round these parts.)

At evening times, many police vehicles may be doing patrols so will be travelling at a lower speed, I always cars banking behind and who won't overtake.

Sometimes if you overtake a police car at night in little traffic the chances of being intercepted are high.

Agree with Toxix XR though, I have lost count the amount of times I've been behind a police car travelling a happy 10-15 over although on the bright side they did not pull me over.

Oh and yes those SS/XR8s do get a fair squirt at night when no-one's watching ;) (or they don't think anyone is anyway).

Its another yes vote for me. I smile every time I see a line of cars sitting behind a cop car too scared to overtake him. Then I just slide on by right on the speed limit.

a few years ago when we were moving from Townsville to here i had a patrol car pull out in front of me on the Bruce at Proserpine. heading south towards Mackay he got into the 100 zone and surprise, surprise everyone in front of him is doing about 90. i'm thinking he got jack with that after a while and started overtaking cars. so i just tail gated him, when he went, i went. i'm sure he was having fun clearing the traffic in his SS with this pepper red XB GT up his a$$. once we cleared the traffic we basically sat on 115-120 til about Kutabul (50k north of Mackay) where i pulled in after a friendly wave and waited for the missus who was in the old Bravo 4x4. i know it's not an overtaking story but sometimes you've got to admit there are some that are human.
