Hi,i have a mk2 escort and just wondering i had capri struts in the front of it.The reason why i ask is that the gearbox tunnel was made bigger and it also had a 2L pinto in it.

the Capri struts will have a removeable arm on the strut where the tie rod end from the steering arm connects to
on escort struts this is all one piece larger tunnel could mean plenty of things, normally a 5 speed conversion if it is just a road car - or was the car originally an auto???? Auto tunnels are larger than manuals |

As for the gearbox tunnel has always been as far as i know its been a manual, could have been an auto at some stage. But the way the gearbox tunnel is looks like its been put in after it was built. |

Capri struts are the same as twin cam escort struts (Mk 1)
As Stated they have removeable streering arms and the stub axel is welded higher up on the strut tube...ie there is more tube about an inch or so under the stub axel. In the UK they are known as RS struts and carried through into the Mk 2 Escorts on the RS and mexico models. No Mk 2s in Australia were fitted with these struts but were a common upgrade. The gearbox tunnel is often modified in escorts. Common swaps are 5 spd sierra and celica boxes which need changes to the tunnel and shifter position. If your car was originally a manual there should be a "V" next to the gearbox code on the vin plate. |
