mirror tint

im wanting darker tint for my car and want it so that you cant really see inside from the outside but dont want it to be illegal so i get defected either but i was wondering if anyone knew if mirror tint was illegal or any good or how expensive it is etc as i dont really know anything about it

I know in NSW any kind of mirror tint is illegal. I note your location is SA. perhaps have a look on the SA Transport site

All decent tint is illegal.

35% is not much at all, you can still see clearly though it during the day.

Its not legal (most legal tint in qld is 35 i think?)
But you never get done for it
because cops cant prove what percentage it is, so just say that its the most legal you could get and the windows are just what makes it look dark and they wont be rooted arguing
Unless its a mirror tint, that might be harder to explain haha

I love my tinted windows aye! For all my cars Ive owned Ive gotten 5% and thanks God I can honestly say I have had any dramas from them yet by the boys in blue.

If the cops havedoubts about your tint they can defect you on the spot and you have to go and prove that it's legal or not. I believe that is how it works. My car came with factory tint on the back. I got the front matched which happens to be 20% which is one one shade too dark. So how can the back windows pass the ADR but my front is same darkness yet technically illegal stupid Australian rules

Because thats they way the ADR's are written. Forward of the B Pillar must bust >35% transmittance, rear can be darker.

Yeah from what I understand the police have a little measuring jig. If they cannot see the little dot when they put it behind your window they have grounds to defect you.

I've seen a few rear windows with pitch black / mirror tint on them, however the front always appears to be limited to darkest legal.

Most times you can get away with pretty dark tint (my XR6 has really dark but can't tell you the percentage as I didn't want to know, just told the tint guy to go almost limo tint).
The Police do have a little card thing they can use to see if your window's are too dark which they did test on my car, most times they don't bother but as these coppers come into work and stir me all the time they did it just to see.

Put it on, if you get hassled and a defect or a warning, rip it off.

hey guys thanks for all your replies...i was thinking of just getting really dark tint and hoping i wouldnt get pulled over but with my luck i doubt ill be able to have it on for a week without being defected with the amount of cops i drive past...then id have to take my exhaust off at the same time :( would be good to have really dark tint though looks so much better imo.

I thought that the regulations were mostly for front windows...
I've seen cars with Mirror or dark as the Ace of Spades tint on rear windows, but light or no tint on the drivers/front windows??

Hire cars get away with it (on what grounds i'm unsure), so why not the general public??

Mirror tint is VERY dangerous.

The reflection of the sun can be blinding and should you cause a fatal accident you will not have a lot of fun.

It is also a really good way of upsetting people, some of whom may not be friendly.....

When I got my car done recently (in WA) I just got darkest legal. I asked about one of the employees cars which had really dark back side windows and they said it was tint over factory privacy glass (which in this case was actually coloured glass).

Apparently the regs only apply to how dark the tint is and doesn't prevent you from putting that tint on glass that is actually coloured. This means that actual light transmission through the glass is really low, but the tint itself is still within the legal figures.

Again, just what I was told, and I'd be checking local laws thoroughly before forking out what I assume would be a lot of money for coloured automotive glass.

The rules with tint apply to windscreen - top band only and front side windows can have a maximum of 35% tint.

The rear and rear side windows can have as dark as you like, think van. Provided you have 2 exterior mirrors (any car built after 1980 really).

However really dark tint is terrible at night be warned.

Have a look around for 3m scotchtint. It is a 35% film that looks really dark. Bit pricey but worth it. I've had the sides and rears of my ute done in it.

Yeah, that is 35% scotchtint.
It is difficult to find a place that does it. Perhaps call 3m themselves and ask and distributors in SA.

that tint looks much much darker than the darkest legal mate, doubt it is 35%
