Anyone following the Oroville Dam in the US?
They are in big *****, it's the biggest dam in the US and they have had the emergency spill way flowing over the top? Not to mention half the spillway is eroded away as the stuffed around when the saw a problem and missed fixing it, then more rain, now the ice is melting and more rain to come, evacuations are full on, don't now if they will get away with this one. Youtube it. They've been letting go 100,000 cubic feet per second and are loosing against time and erosion. Info is a day behind so hard to get up to date *****. Cheers Steve

The main reason why that spillway is eroding is because of what I saw on tv, it seems as though the main spillway developed a massive sink hole which forced the closure of that section to release water, so what they done was use the backup emergency spillway which they've probably never really used which is basically crumbling away. Hearing that on tv gives you a picture in your head where you can imagine the americians saying "what's the point of upgrading that section of the dam, we haven't used it in how ever long its been", so when this freak amount of rain has hit and things have gone critical, the emergency spillway is now critical of breaking apart.

This reminds me of a fairly extensive documentary I saw a couple of years ago regarding many dams in the US. Make no mistake, this dam is not unique. There are many dams that are in such poor condition over there and the majority of them are located near heavily populated areas. Most of these dams were built quite a long time ago (early-mid 20th century) and used building techniques that are controversial with modern architects.
They have been putting off repairing the dams because they simply couldn't afford to fix them all, so they are letting ticking time-bombs sit there in poor repair and hoping that nothing goes wrong. Basically every politician just hopes that nothing serious happens during their time in office and they keep passing the buck onto the next guy. |

I understand if it lets go, many people's lives will be ruined and that is a terrible thing and I wouldn't wish it upon anyone but, in my opinion, it will be a most awesome sight to see and I would love to be there when it happens

Take the total supply of the buckets of damp rid, and the do not consume moisture things you get in boxes and throw them all in the dam. That should fix the problem. Dunno if it's good for the wild life though.

A few truckloads of the cat litter crystals on top should prevent it from happening again... I did read that the advise that the backup floodgates were recomended to be upgraded to concrete, but it later got overturned as they have never been used since the damn dam was completed in 68. Now who's laughing. Obviously not the guy who has probably lost his job.

Could be big trouble here in the next couple of hours,
Now flowing full on over the emergency spill (can watch live in youtube) Very good chance of loosing the emergency spill way which will put a 30 ft wall of water a couple of hundred of miles. I could see this happening, these guys are stupid!! One look at the weather and this was very possible and likely to happen. In the next 4 hours I think they will loose the emergency spillway. Cheers Steve

The earth on the side of the spillway has collapsed, no amount of fill will fix that, think this might be lost

Oh man. Its a case of putting heaps of cameras up and get as far away from the flood zone as possible by the sounds of that.
Did they end up cancelling the evac or did they keep it?

Guess it's not over,
still Sunday there, they were meant to get 10 inches over the region for the weekend to Monday, could still be in deep poo. Bloody news is crap, can't seem to get anything up to date. Apparently all the dams in the ares are at the top, one goes they all go. Cheers Steve

Still raining there,
They have lost half the spill way, cut a new spill off to the left behind the dam. How much water does that dam hold?? 4.5 Trillion cubic meters of water (1000 Lt = cubic meter) The dam is holding it's own for now, spill way is slowly turning to poo. If it stops raining, they may skid through, if not, hope they film it.

Still could go any way, weather is being a little kinder than the first thought it was.
Still total BS with the news, found one dude doing such a good job one of the big news companies are looking like giving him a press pass to get him on site. This is his latest report which is finally some truth about just where they are https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0Ij7cD2C8Y 8 minutes of gold and there it is, that's what's really happening. Finally Cheers Steve
