Post GM Holden confirms VF Commodore Series II reveal on September 13

"GM Holden has confirmed it will reveal the final Australian-made Commodore on Sunday, September 13.

The announcement came this morning via a media invitation to attend "a very special event" hosted by GM Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Mark Bernhard, in Melbourne on the weekend of the Sandown 500 V8 Supercars event.

Bernhard will share his "vision for Holden's" with journalists on the Saturday evening before the upgraded VF Commodore Series II is officially revealed at the company's Port Melbourne headquarters the following day.

"The exciting reveal of Holden's best ever Commodore will be set in a special Commodore Gallery, celebrating 37 years of this iconic vehicle," said Holden.

Holden will not provide further details but motoring.com.au understands the VFII Commodore will be released in October.

Further limited-edition specials are expected over the next two years, but the VFII will be the last homegrown Commodore before production ceases at the end of 2017.

Holden is expected to stockpile large numbers of the most popular VFII models – especially the V8 versions that account for more than 30 per cent of current VF sales – for sale well into 2018.

The same year will see Holden release its first imported Commodore – almost certainly based on the replacement for Germany's front/all-wheel drive, four/six-cylinder Opel Insignia sedan and wagon.

Much has been written about the VF Commodore facelift, which is now confirmed to wear the Series II name and expected to feature a revised front-end design, updated interior and infotainment upgrades.

As we revealed exclusively last October, the biggest change will be reserved for the MY16 Commodore SS, which will upgrade from its existing L98 6.0-litre V8 to an HSV-matching 6.2-litre bent eight.

Since then most media outlets have reported the same story, with one 'exclusively' claiming that the VFII SS's L99 6.2 V8 will deliver 304kW, based on an ADR certification document for the MY15 Caprice, which has since been removed from the federal government's transport department website.

Meantime, other reports insist HSV will upgrade its entire short-wheelbase VFII Commodore-based line-up with a detuned version of the supercharged 6.2-litre V8 in the GTS range-topper.

HSV's current 6.2 LS3 V8 range opens with the 317kW/550Nm ClubSport sedan and Maloo ute, while all other models bar the GTS offer 340kW/570Nm with either six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

Holden's current VF Commodore SS, meanwhile, produces 260kW/517Nm in automatic form, and 270kW/530Nm as a manual.

Apart from a bigger, more powerful V8 – with camshaft phasing as well as Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation and E85 ethanol capability – VFII SS models will finally bring the option of steering wheel shift paddles for automatic models, plus a bimodal exhaust and rear as well as front Bembo brakes, as per the Craig Lowndes limited-edition."

lol @ Holden motor upgrades.

It's a comforting tear and a swell of pleasure to see Holden's final roll call still struggling with catchups.

Well done Broady & Geelong. You started it, and you finished it. You said you would and you did...

Well done on an outstanding final round that's left the opposition realing in the wake.

Viva la XR8, the final, finest benchmark of Aussie HP wars.

I think an SSV wagon sounds like it might be a pretty compelling package and worthy to replace my XR50T......

Lets wait and see......

Count me in for a ss redline series 2 next year. After having an fg gt and fg2 xr6 turbo, as much as I want a xr8 I can't go back to that interior, need something a bit more modern and exciting

I doubt Holden/HSV are the slightest bit interested in what Ford have done.

The LSA going into the Clubbies was a necessity. They are selling in pathetic numbers compared to the SSV, and with an engine upgrade on the cards for the SSV, there was little option.

The GTS with an LS9 ... that will be a last chance at pure profit for HSV. There will be no shortage of people lining up for one, and they'll pay whatever HSV ask. A couple years back we were laughing at the money HSV was asking for the GTS ... look around, they're everywhere.

The Series 2 announcement is very bittersweet, as will the last hurrah Falcon hero car one.

Most people seem to think that all we are losing is the ability to manufacture cars, I contend we will lose a hell of a lot more come 2016/17.

As reported in the latest Wheels magazine, HSV had to order a certain amount of the Supercharged LSA from GM Powertrain so there would be a urgency to make sure those engines have a home.

The media make out how well the GTS is selling but the above situation would partly explain the good sales numbers. Wheels also pointed out that HSV have also been selling surplus engines to sell throughout the dealer network. Even my local Holden dealer (who are not even HSV dealers) were advertising LSA crate engines.

^ Its the same deal with the rumoured LS9 GTS. GM have surplus engines laying around and HSV have an option to make a bulk purchase of a hundred or 2. They have sold abit more than 2000 GTS's in 2yrs which is not a bad effort for a $95k Aussie car.

That doesnt even make sense. Ford is closing a year before GMH and will run out of Falcons a full two years before GMH stop selling Commodores. It will go out as a poor seller compared to its arch rival and finish well behind Commodores total sales over the past ten years. How is GMH reeling from that?

Thank goodness Ford have the Mustang to try and make up lost ground.

I also frowned at that post. FG and VE were about as close as they've ever been. VF and FGX are not that close, I'm afraid. Holden still believes in a V8 that everyone can afford, they put it in the utes, sedans, wagons and not just in SS format but Calais too. Ford sell one single V8 car (after a 4 year stretch of no V8 at all) which is hugely more expensive than the cheapest SS variant and is a limited quantity build- whereas 1/3 of all VFs sold are V8s. Holden has nothing to be reeling over, in fact particularly in these times, Commodore going out with 1/3 of the mix still V8 powered is a triumph. They likely sell more V8 Commodores per month than Ford sell total FGX Falcons which is a pretty remarkable achievement.

C1 is upgraded based on security requirements.
It has nothing to do with the Prime Minister or party politics.

Tony Abbott's personal car is a Ford Territory which in an interview he claimed was, "the best car ever produced in this country''.

Hmmm manual LSA Maloo R8. If they'd just de-plasticize the thing a bit it's be one nice ride. Be interesting to see if much has changed with the cosmetics.
