I think you'll find that there will be both the 5.3 alloy block, as well as the 6.0l.

250kw for the SS.

Rumor going round on LS1 is that the next one may be the 5.3L LS3 with the 6.0L LS2 reserved for the upper market models/hsv.

I would think that 264kW is more politically correct than 300kW. Then there's the fuel saving technologies of DOD which the LS2 doesn't (yet) have.

Have you seen how *WELL* the fuel savings of DOD work in the new Chrysler 4WD with a 'large' V8?

some in the order of 16L/100km on the freeway in a recent test and 22L/100km in the city.

DOD might not be the saviour everyone thinks it will be....

LS2 will make its way into the regular holden range with VZ series 2 later this year......

Wrt DOD, it works on light throttle. Time will tell if it works but don't take Chrysler's technology at face value (or base it on 4WD figures) as their V8s use way more fuel than GM's, for some reason.

Where did you get these figures from? I was reading carsguide in the local paper and they claimed the DOD equipped Chrysler 4WD they tested returned 13.5L/100km or "better than a 6cyl family sedan from ford or holden" (which is a lie in itself).

Even the sticker on the window of the Jeep Hemi is rated over 15.... you guys can all buy DOD to save you money, but I believe just babying a V8 will save you more than having 4 cylinders not firing. The 4.7V8 is still more economical than the 5.7 with DOD If you want economy, you would buy the diesel.

I reckon it'll be the 5.3L. Why would you waste the money de-tuning the LS2? It'd be cheaper to bring in a "crate" 5.3 motor in either iron or aluminium.

Well unless Holden has a massive stockpile of LS1s around, it will be either a derivative of the LS2 or LS3 as they don't produce the LS1 anymore

engines just cant keep getting bigger . holdens currant 5.7 litre and now 6 litre hsv is about it you would think . so in these days a 5.3 litre that produces similar power to 5.7 . makes sense . aspecially if it is lighter and more economic. ford are still only at 5.4 litres which is bloody big enough .

Why would the 5.3 be lighter? it's the same engine block! and if it's a 5.3 with no 5.7 or 6.0 option - why would anyone wanna trade in their VT2-VZ?
And don't say, they have to upgrade to an HSV, cos i don't want an HSV, i want a 6 litre in a normal Holden.

Because the 5.3 engine would make exactly the same power, and public perception is that smaller capacity = lower fuel consumption. 99% of the public has no clue that the GenIV 5.3 and 6.0s share identical bottom end's, so they'll think it'll be far more economical. Plus its a newer car, and people want new cars. I mean, if people went by that mentality, why would I upgrade my old car if its bigger/more powerful/faster then the new one, Ford never would have sold an XA GT after the XY HOs, they'd have never sold an XC Cobra after the XA/XB GTs, never sold an ESP 351 after the GTs etc. People buy new cars for more reasons then just engine capacity and power output....

Can we ditch the arrogance? 4VMan I am not a only Holden buyer ok, and even if I was, doesnt mean you have to be so damn rude.
My concern would be if the 5.3 could tow as well, and feel as good in the low end, i know journalists have criticized the LS1 for already suffering there, but I have found the Ls1 to be a much better towing engine than the old 5 litre V8s. I know the 5.3 can match the 5.7 in power when tuned properly, but i would need a towing test to become conviced it was at least as good, and to bother upgrading, I would want something that was worth the upgrade.

I think the perception thing might work for many "economical" cars like the Camry which uses more fuel than a Falcon, but for V8s, i think that's not the case

Certainly not opposed to Ford or Chrysler, Ford just need to step up the LWB cars a little, otherwise I prefer the Falcon over the Commodore.

All the engines on that list are for SUV's, hence they are more likely truck motors. Having a list of engines available for use in passenger cars would have been more useful. From that list I'd say the 5.3 with DOD would be the pick as it has more power than the stock Holden (non SS) LS1, with potentially better economy.

the 6.0 and 6.2 also have aluminium blocks, and the 6.0 has DOD. The only advantage of the 5.3, is it is E85 compatible - pitty the 6 litre isnt, i think E85 would be awesome, surely GM could make all their V8s E85
