Tipping...and not the sport kind

was out at dinner last night and had a superb dinner and service at Shanikias in Berwick. I thought id show my thanks in a tip. only a small tip, but a tip none the less.
one thing about tipping i found amazing, is that my gf works in a pokies venue and gets tips all the time. thats the last place i would have thought people would give tips.

i know its seen more as an american thing to do, but im curious, do other people tip, and if so whats seen as appropriate?

I'll tip at a restaraunt if I think the food or service was good. You can even do it via eftpos, there is a tip button lol.

As for how much, well that depends on how good you feel the food/service was I guess. I dont tip a percentage just an amount.

I only would if the staff and/or food is exceptional.
In USA waitstaff make less the $3 an hour and rely on tips to make up the rest of their income. Here they would be only at least $15 so they are making ok money and should only be tipped for extra work.

I don't tip here. I think it's silly how a lot of places in the US have low wages and they rely on tips. Because that just means that customers are paying the workers and not the restaurant.

nah i pay cash for just about everything, and so when i go out for dinner, and i pay $37.20 for example and hand over a pineapple, i'll get back a bluebottle and chuck the shrappers in the tin

I only ever bother if the service and food are really spot on, and even then I dont really. Come to think of it, it really about the service, some waiters/ess' do the extra mile and these days getting good service is rare although it should be by default.

I certainly dont tip alot, usually just the change when I pay with notes or something... $10 would be my max

in us ur tip is ually added into the bill ie.. $37.50 for food, plus gst plus 6% tip
it works usually on the percetage of the meal.

My father used to always tip and I always tip. Even when I pay via credit card, there's a tip line. Especially if it's a place you go to often, you'll notice all of a sudden that the staff are a lot more attentive to you.

If the waiter/ress provides better than usual service they have pride in their job imo I'm happy to reward them - % will vary accordingly to the type of place I'm in.
If it's just a job to them I would rarely leave anything and at times let them know for they expect something don't they ? so in return I tell them why much to my wifes embarassment !

Yeah I tip. Not always. I feel people should earn my tip, and usually if they do it is good. I had a meal with my old ex a few years ago, it was at enzo's on port road, pretty good place, and the food was excellent, service even better. The bill was about $130 and that was for 3 courses and some vodka for her. I tipped $30, I felt it was well earned. The waiter was very attentive but not in your face, and he made us feel pretty important in a restaurant i'd not usually be eating in. I've tipped taxi drivers who drove well and didn't get lost on the way home, but that's usually rare and I usually tip about $5.

I have no doubt fallen for the drunken tip to a cab. Some cabbies are gold though, have had some classic conversations on the way home from a big night.

I never tip in restaurants! Do any of you blokes tip your mechanic, the local car salesman, your real estate agent or the young girl at Woolworths to? Service is service. I'm sure the staff love tips, but i've always seen tipping as degrarding to staff, and most people only tip to impress their guests. My theory, i always pay in cash, and if i'm saving the owner 3-4% in visa, credit card fees, well that's my tip and i make it quite clear that this saving/bonus should go in the collection jar for the staff, not in the owners pocket.

ive worked in retail for 7 years (6 yrs maccas, 1 year ALDI) get all kinds of generous people (so they think) who do the whole "its ok you can keep the 5c's"
the ones who really make me laugh is the ones who get this look of wow im being so nice to this guy lol

i like it in the US with the tipping service. this is my reason why, i find in country's where you need to tip the service is always better then here where you don't. over there they need to work for your tip or they may as well work for nothing. here they get paid well so there is no need for them to go to any lengths to please the customer. customer service in tipping country's is always better then country's that dont for this reason

Real estate agent - far out he's already getting 10odd % and more in some case's thats his tip if he can sell for more.
Car salesmen never - somehow I just don't believe them
As for my regular mechanic - you bet but I pass on gifts, slabs,promo items from my work etc - he goes the extra mile, fix's things on the spot,gives me my wife loan cars when required and above all makes sure no one but he works on my cars. Well worth rewarding/tipping for good service IMO for he doesn't let me down.

I eat out a lot and 9/10 it's on the corp card - I don't tip from that at all. I will tip if I get exceptional service but most often I get what I pay for and feel no desire to hand over more. I take the time to tell staff if they have done a great job and if the opp presents, I'll tell their boss too.

If there is less than say, $10 in the change I'll leave it there if I am content. If I am not happy, I do a quick count in my head of what I have paid v the service I have received. If it is well out of kilter I'll take the time to inform the establishment of my experience - if I don't speak up, how will they know otherwise?

I tip in countries where it's custom. I tip in Australia when I get treated well by whoever is serving me. But the tip isn't a set percentage or anything, just whatever loose change is left from the bill.

Having said that, the last dinner I attended, the waitress went out of her way to ensure that we were served promptly and she joked around and really connected with us. She got a decent tip because she earn't it (and we tucked it into her pocket discreetly so that it wasn't shared with the dozen other workers there).

We had lunch at a place in denmark yesterday, everytime we go there the service is great, food excellent and the location is awesome. Right up in this valley so from your table you can see right out to the ocean. I gave them a small tip as it was deserved.

the whole idea of tips is a reward for above average service if I feel a tip is deserved I give one and the amount depends on how good it was and how generous I feel and how flush i am at the time

I've left the occassional tip at Macca's or KFC. You know when the value of your meal has 95c in it. Keep the change.
