Default Falcon V8 Supercar vs Large turboed RX7 *track video*

V8 Pushrod Mullet Ownage

Its from the new high octane dvd if anybody is wondering.
Good track battle, wont spoil who wins though. :

Fair fight... not!
V8 Super = 1350kg, with 11" wide rims, steel bodyshell (High centre of Gravity)
Sports Sedan with a 12A = under 1000kg with bigger rubber (Only bit steel is the roof skin and the door frames, the rest is fiberglass)

However, V8s built to the same set of rules absolutely Pwn the rotaries... 1000-1100kg with the same big rubber (possibly bigger under the cacity rules?) and 600+hp from 6.0l of grunt.....

Dont forget the Rx has the engine mid-mounted.

Where were they racing? a GoKart track?
The 10 year old V8Supercar was lucky to be able to use 450hp on that track..

Get a current SBR car,do it again at Sandown and give them 15 laps then lets see...

Build them to the same set of rules (1350kg, 7500rpm limiter, 6spd manual etc = V8 Supercar) and see what would win. Plus it was only two laps....

Plus they're not far apart power/weight wise... that RX-7 = 450hp and 1000kg, 450hp/tonne. The EL V8 Supercar = 614hp and 1355kg, 455hp/tonne.

But yeah, try an SBR BA (634hp, 1355kg, 468hp/tonne) against the EL and see the massive performance difference...

put the V8 in the mazda's body. then race them. End of story. Rotories are fast, no doubt, but the v8 would just destroy it in the same shell.

Exactly right. Give the rotary the 1350kg weight of the EL and the same 7500rpm limiter... and it wouldn't move. There is no parity in a comparison like this. The Mazda had a crutch in the form of restrictive regulations the V8 Supercar adheres to, which helped it win, and it was only two laps, the EL looked like it was running the RX-7 down.

Always makes you laugh when they compare apples with oranges, then tell you that "X's" are better!
Sports Sedans are very very quick. I notice that they used quite an old V8 chassis. Would be much closer (possibly even swapped order) if they used a 2005 V8 Supercar chassis. That was Wakefield Park, very tight track. Awesome to watch racing at, you can see the whole track from almost any vantage point.
I remember Steve Johnson was competeing in both Sports Sedans and V8 Supercars years ago and took out a DJR Falcon (EL?) to compete at QLD Raceway. He finished around 7th I think. Not bad considering he was getting owned on the straights.
Those 2 rotaries are pretty quick, but get owned regularly by Ricciardello and the rest with their V8's.

Thats the one I was trying to think of. Been around for ages and just destroys the rotorys. That thing is amazing.. it would have won by a good 1/3 lap :P

Hi-Octane is very tounge in cheek guys, no need to get too worked up...lol

And restricting a chook-cooker to 7500rpm is like restricting a V8 to using only 6 spark plugs. I'd love to own that little rotory sports sedan, siiiik!!!

Not a good comparison in IMO, a family sedan vs a sportscar is bs, try a Ford sportscar vs the Mazda :

I agree with Falcon Coupe, I don't think anyones bashed the rotaries. The 2 they used their are quick little cars, just not the quickest Sports Sedans/ TraNZAms out there.

I love my V8's , but I have also had several rotary's as well and love em too !

Yep , they should have picked a fair fight! A chihuhua can aslo beat a pittbull in a fight ! If it gets stuck in the pittbulls throat and chokes it death!

Anyway I reckon the V8 did a awsome job against the rotary. But they really need a few more laps and a couple of different tracks to prove anything

Was a little unfair being on such a tight track, try PI or QR and it would be differn't but they wouldn't have liked the big V8 winning would they...

The first RX7 they showed (the one that got damaged driving off the track) would've eaten the falcon alive it had more power.

Outright power doesn't equal performance around a race track. If it did... nothing would touch a Top Fueler... 8000hp must mean it'll be great around a track.

No, but it certainly does help.
Especially in the RX7's case with its already superb handling.

In what way does it help? A Mk1 Lotus Elise has 88kW of power, and it can outhandle many more powerful supercars even if it can't match them in a straight line. More power won't necessarily help it be faster around a track... it might very well make it uncontrollable around corners...

Power is secondary to chassis balance, suspension design etc. Plus, they both looked like tube-frame racecars to me (the V8 Supercar definitley is), so how the road car handles is a moot point, as the only thing they'd share in common is how the car looks.
