Default Whats the best way to keep a plastic Jerry Can secure

Hi Guys

I just bought a 10 litre plastic Jerry Can for my interstate trip next month. Whats the best & cheapest way to secure it from sliding around in the boot of my BA Falcon. Looking in the boot there are no loops or hooks to secure it too. I dont want to drill any holes etc. Anyone got any suggestions/solutions?

You could secure it with some strapping down and around your spare tyre

Put the can to the side and place a cinder block next to it. That will sandwich the can to the wall and it shouldn't move unless you're really floggin the car around.

just get a milk crate from somewhere and put it in there. then you can put a bottle of coolant in there too, and maybe a bottle of oil. keep it all together, and wont fall over.

How about some "Stick on Velcro" , very light , compact & should be pretty cheap . It will just stick to the carpet .

Cinder block is so not practial. Who want's to carry that interstate. If there's nothing else in your boot to wedge it up there should be somewhere you can run a strap from.
Even just a strap around the 40 part of the 60/40 split fold seat will suffice. Should be no issues putting the seat back up.

that is going to stink out whatever else you put near it, especially if the jerry can is vented.. I wouldn't be too keen on leaving it in the boot on a hot day if it isn't..

How far do you reckon you will get on 10L and is it worth the trouble?

Yeah, 20l is the way to go... Alternatively, mounting 2 44gal drums to the boot lid will work too.

if you are going for a trip its a good chance you will have enough stuff for it to be packed in with.
if not. if it is tight enough it wont leak just lay it down and it will not move much. iv got like 5 little boxs of tools in the boot of my car and they just lay there and hardly go anywhere and thats with me flying around corners etc.

If you're going on a long trip there's nothing wrong with carrying "spares" . A mate & I drove to WA years ago & took 20L water , metal Jerry Can of fuel , spare fanbelt , small trolly jack , tool kit , oil , extra spare wheel , extra food Etc.

We didn't need it , but came across a guy in an old EJ wagon with a flat tyre miles out from Ceduna , the "dipstick" had NO spares at all , not even a jack or wheel brace and had his wife and 2 small kids in the car . The kids were hungry & thirsty so we were able to fix that , and when it came to looking at the tyres , they were all wornout RECAPS ? ? including the spare .

At least we were able to change the wheel so he could get to the next town .

Needless to say , we offered him some friendly advice with many adjectives and waving of arms , something in the context of what a fool he was .

If we didn't have all the "junk" he could have sat there for hours with disastrous results .

Ok left field, the BA boot floor looking in right side has a lower groove where it fits around the spare running front to back.

a piece of mdf cut to that length ( may need 2 joined ) so it sits in the groove from that peice with mdf build a boxed section , attaching to the lond front back mdf.

you may need or want to cover the front back mdf bottom sides that sit in the groove with carpet or rubber, so it fits very sbug and this piece acts as a stop slide for the joining box that holds the jerry.

would have been easier to draw i suppose but the idea is there

Edit : Scott , i am not sure how big the jerry is but if size is right with the sytem above you could build the box to sit over where the jack is, leaving the rest of the floor pan for normal packing.

Hell, the latest Ford ute does't even have real spare. What happens if you get stuck outside of Ceduna with one of those 80km at 80Km/h things? Saw one on a BA ute yesterday, with the 80 sticker on it. Totally innapropriate fo a workhorse don't you think?

I would never get a car that doesn't have a full size spare. Period. Especially now that we are living in the country as well.
As for securing things, it's easy in the EL. Just strap it to the big bloody gas tank in the boot :P
Is there nowhere in the BA where you can wrap an occy strap around? Surely there must be something somewhere, perhaps behind the lining on the walls of the boot?
Alternatively, what about the parcel shelf? Is there something there you can secure it to? You only need to really keep it upright so there wouldn't be too much need to secure the bottom of the jerry can. Other things can hold that in place.

This is why you need a ute over a sedan ... sedans are overrated.

I don't think I was seeing things. I know the E gas sedans definately have space saver.
Of all the things they leave off you actually get a full sized spare with a Toyota Yaris, the sedan anyway.
I just had a look at the Ford website. Even the LPG ute is meant to have a full size. I that case I don't know where this ute got its space saver from???
