Terrible figures for both Ford and Holden. It was a big story not so long ago when Toyota toppled Holden to be the biggest seller in Australia. Now Toyota sell nearly 4 times the volume of Holden and Ford are in just as much trouble.

Sold almost as many Hilux alone as Ford and Holden total.

I'll probably get hammered for saying this, but Ford are probably in a worse position than Holden as we all know that the current crop of Holden offerings are ordinary, whereas Fords lineup is quality but they're still losing ground.

I'm going to get hammered here but I also think Holden has it better in this position then Ford.

Colorado and Astra are proving to be a strong sellers for Holden, with Acadia actually starting to gain higher than expected interest.

Whereas Ford are solely relying on Ranger, with no other strong seller to back them up if Ranger begins to decline.

So your theory is that there's safety in numbers?
Holden's numbers still don't add up to more than Ford even after heavy discounting.
The truth is that both Ford and Holden suck no matter how they achieved those poor numbers.

The ball is in Ford's court as it's always been and without competitive product,
you can't get people in the door to even consider if your product is worth the effort..

Apart from Ranger, the rest of Ford's line up accounted for about 1800 sales,
I'd lay odds that was Mustang, Everest, Escape and maybe Endura combined.
the rest are so embarrassingly terrible that they are just not worth counting.....

Maybe I'm going alone thinking this, but it seems wiser to not put all your eggs in one basket (Ford & Ranger), and instead spread across several instead (Holden & Astra / Colorado / Acadia).

What is driving Ford Australia is not so much what most customers want (obviously)
but what it can sell at the highest margins - Ranger + Everest+Mustang + Endura.
It's like Ford is discarding whole segments where it doesn't have decent margins on vehicles.

Holden on the other hand survived a horror 2018 with upwards of 13,000 vehicles on the grass,
so bad that they stopped shipments where it could to clear down that stockpile with generous discounts.

..meanwhile, Ford with nothing but Ranger, Everest, Mustang and Escape soldiered on in 2018
finally getting new Focus and Endura very late in the year.....not sure how much these will add..

Something else that needs to be considered is product cycle, i cant think of any other brands which have had as many new products released in such a short time span recently.

New Ranger, Mustang, Endura, Focus.

There's a lot of demo registrations amongst that lot so even the numbers provided are probably heavily skewed based on them filling the forecourts with new registered stock of each over the last 3 months.

Then theres the special orders for Raptor and Bullitt which would have boosted numbers in the short term as they filled the orders.

Wouldn't surprise me to see figures drop below 4k in the next few months considering the market decline.

Mustang down from @ 369 units.(December,439) Ranger hammered again @2564 units (December,3365) Ford would be slightly concerned? Commodore up slightly up @ 403 units.(December 381) Hilux powers on again @ 3951 units(December,3871) is there no stopping them?Even Corolla is biting @ Rangers heels.”Honeymoon” over for Mustang? A lot of new ones in dealers yards. You just cannot pick the market @ the moment.Cheers

Don't take this the wrong way but the sheer size of Toyota now (Big as Holden in the 70's)
is such that its dealer footprint can absorb so any more demos and 2018 plat run outs.
It's not mass discounting but the sheer weight of numbers means that Toyota just
sells more top, middle and bottom.....the thin figures at Ford and Holden reveal survival tactics,
keep selling and hang on for a change in circumstances...I mean what else can they do...

See I'm wondering about the Ford Demos you mentioned, if they were $20k or even $30K vehicles,
you'd have reason for concerned but when they are more like $50K-$60K demo, well, that's
more like luring people that Ford knows are sitting on the fence, there's just not that much inventory.

The one thing I've learned about "Ford discounts" and demos are that they are not the bargain you first think,
they usually have all kinds of stuff added in there to boost the price back up...

The companies selling dual cabs will be making decent profits in 2019. The Hondas, Subarus, Kias and Hyundais of the world will need to rely on razor thin margins this year. There is little money in anything else.

@JPD80,Toyota is the “new Holden” of Australia. It has been for many years. As you alluded to it has a massive footprint in this country.Anywhere you travel in this country, you can pretty well guarantee a Toyota dealer in that town.Cheers

Any brand without strong sales of 18 plate run outs will see sales drops in January
no real discounts on most Ford lines and those that do have discounts are still bloody expensive...

There's not that many Ford RHD product out there and until Ford does new ones, well that's all we get..
The Ford Europe line up is just terrible and its going to take time to fix let alone get some RHDs
In the meantime our Ford Aus showroom is dominated by the vehicles Ford wants to sell.

What starts with R and ends in 'cession', last seen in 1995?

Add to that there will be some kind of tax status change on dual cab utes and as housing goes down so will construction (and new car sales tacked on home loans). Interesting times are here again.

WOW!

Meanwhile in Australia, only 59 people were stupid enough to buy an EcoSport in January.

I think the mustangs major problem is the price hike that the new model brought. High 50’s is affordable for many people, 70+ isn’t.
I also think it was a mistake removing new cars from Carsales. I’ve bought my last 2 cars spur of the moment by noticing a deal that’s too good to pass up.
