Interesting that it's a K code engine. I wonder how many were ordered with the hand-built option?

It's not a K code. It's a H code.

So I gather the K just means it was a 351? Presumably the Blocks were stamped before being built??

So was the "H" all HO Engines?
Was there anything to distinguish those that has been through the extra QC/"blueprint" process??

In XYs H on the compliance plate designates the factory mechanical cam HO spec motor along with the necessary support ancillaries. The revised clearance QC motors were supplied to dealers seperate from the cars to help with reliability so they could finish the 1971 Bathurst race.

I read somewhere that you could order a HO from the factory with a QC motor as an option. An extra $380-ish comes to mind , but I'm happy to be corrected.

From what I can recall it was $250.

Can't remember if there was a QC painted onto the engine somewhere, or a tag to identify them though.

Yeah I think it appeared in literature that the Q.C. motor could be ordered as a $250 option. More than likely this is a lost in translation scenario and the $250 was in reality the nominal amount dealers payed to be supplied with a Q.C. engine for the Bathurst race.
I think the Q.C. memos and accompanying paperwork from April and May 1971 was published in one of the muscle car mags a few years back? For the benefit of those that have not seen it in a nut shell Fords Special Vehicle Manager Al Turner made a request for 20-25 Q.C. engines to be built at the Geelong Engine Plant. Q.C. engine specification were to be coordinated by Special Vehicles and referred to as Q.C.-U.S. Audit Engines. This direct quote probably better explains the purpose of these engines.

"Recently the Managing Director (Al Turner) requested that a special build of GTHO engines be conducted to enable dealers to be more competitive than in the past at the Bathurst 500 race. The basic aim of this programme is not only to ensure that they are competitive but to provide them with an engine that would have greater durability than they are capable of producing themselves."

It is almost a standing joke in the GT community when at times it seems like every second HO3 owner and his dog claims to have a matching number QC motor in their car.

Cheers Mick

I guess such a claim would come down to having the original order documentation to prove it.
Or a letter from Ford, if such records were kept.

Also as the QC motors were built seperate to the cars matching numbers could actually be a bit awkward. The Baldwin Ford race car still retains its supplied QC motor.

The above car is currently bid to 415k..............the online auction does not finish until June sometime. The auction house is predicting a 1 mill price tag..........just a tad ambitious imho.

Won't get over 600. Just imagine how many cars and bikes that money buys you.

The big money has gone from those cars. Anyone under 40 wouldn't care less. And under 30 wouldn't even know what it is.

But we will see

True over 50s know these cars

A 40 year old got their license in 1995. To them a 1971 XY is just an old rust bucket.

Might explain the "Bathurst Landau"s
