I know we have an ebay thread, but this isn't stupid price expensive, this is crazy cheap. Am I missing something, or worth a punt.

$23 isn't going to break my bank.
I'm game. I'll report what happens... The only reservation I have (and I couldn't care about that bit really) is the TV tuner...I've often read that foreign "TV tuner inside" head units don't work with our TV signal here in Australia. No big problem. Remember what the old chestnut says: A Chinese factory making electronic goods (or any goods really) will usually have the brand name items in pretty boxes for their contracted customer going out the front door, and a copy of it in a plain box sneaking out the side door... What's the old saying, " If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is".
But you never know.

They quoted some ludicrous figure like the new iPhone 6 costing "$200 each" or something to manufacture in China...when they have staggeringly huge factories spewing out hundreds of thousands of them a day. Sure they cost that much each to make... |

Hope your car doesn't catch fire. I bought a cheap china torch that recharged from the lighter socket. After about a month the battery exploded as we were driving down the road. Absolute carnage. I actually thought someone had shot us. Lesson learnt, don't buy china ****.

The internal bits are cheap rubbish.
I bought a $99 caravan/car DVD/CD/Radio to install in one of our coaches. It got wired up, and tested twice (volume was very low even on highest settings), then it overheated and hasn't worked since. It's now been disconnected, because we were worried about the risk of fire.

I'm on a four wheel drive forum too, and this sort of discussion pops up now and then with four wheel drive accessories.
An example was a snorkel. Back when we had a 100 series Landcruiser, I wanted a snorkel for it. At the time most snorkels here in Australia were a minimum of about $400, up to maybe $600 plus fitting. Then some mob called Soong 4x4 (or close to that) started advertising out of Hong Kong. They had snorkels with full fitting kit for between one and two hundred dollars. This makes sense...it's a damn piece of moulded plastic and some fittings. Someone on the forum noticed that the part number quoted on the Chinese website was the same as one of the big brand snorkels here in Australia...which was made in China too incidentally but selling here for hundreds of dollars more. The old "customers order out the front door, copy out the side door for us" deal again probably. Now the price of snorkels has dropped dramatically in just the last few years, down to about a "normal" price of $199 for a kit. People who angrily claim they would never buy Chinese rubbish had better not have too close a look at where most of their parts and accessories are made, even the "big brand dinki-di Aussie" ones... |

I should note too that the Hong Kong 4x4 supplier (who did everything from fluffy dice to full diff lock kits and winches and turbos) responded in an interesting way when I sent an email inquiring about the snorkels.
They said in a reply that the cost on the website was for one snorkel, but "if you wish we can supply any quantity from several up to a container full or more, with increasingly lower prices per unit if you buy more". No wonder people were making a killing on Ebay selling stuff like that...but twenty or thirty at a substantial discount over the already-cheap price, then sell them for a couple of hundred less than the price at the time of a snorkel here and you would make a huge profit. However, as I said, now snorkels have dropped to a third of the price they used to be thankfully. This happens with a lot of other cars parts too if you do some sniffing around...Chinese companies will happily deal with anyone, not just companies, who want to buy in bulk. |

My brother has a Chinese double Din entertainment unit in his soarer, it had the touch screen, reversing camera, cd, etc, it is a few years old and still seems to work ok, not as pretty as the big name brands, buttons feel a little cheap, but it works fine, I think it cost a bit more than 23 bucks though : ), good luck with that.

In this case, kitchen cabinets, I could buy a box for around $10 (IKEA quality) or $40 (AU quality) There is good and there is definitely bad! I now only do AU made now but can still compete with Cheap Chinese Bunnings, Masters rubbish ..... but not Ikea as that is really really cheap and nasty crap. (Just a warning for those buying Ikea .... worst quality possible. Its called "Temp Furniture' !)

There is some good chinese stuff out there. I, as a rule, wont buy from China as the shipping time is long and half the time it goes missing. Never had an issue from Hong Kong.

I import a container a month from china, sell the products for half the price that major retailers sell them for, and there is absolutely no difference in the quality of the products.
One thing to be a little careful of, is chinese made no name electrical products. Most brands do import alot of electrical/electronic stuff from china, but the ones that have lasted the test of time, ensure products are built to a certain standard. No brand factories pumping stuff out of china work on the basis that they are somewhat shielded by warranty issues ( after all, how hard are you going to press a chinese supplier if they sell you a $50 part, and it craps itself after a few months). Then there are two types of retailers that sell the cheaper stuff, ie the kmarts etc, that have the muscle to to get every cent back that they have to refund to you for a warranty return, or a smaller retailer, that has a pretty decent markup that they can afford a 10 tp 15% reject rate (even if supplier doesnt play ball). You can be sure that the next time you spend $500 on something electrical, it cost $30 to get it here, the retailer paid $100 for it, and the retailer chews thru $320 of that paying rent, salaries, gst, etc etc. If they are lucky, 10% may dribble down to the profit. The largest impost to people paying 50% less than what they see in the shops, is the minimum order quantities from the chinese suppliers. I could give everyone here a 52 inch LCD tv for under $200 etc, but unless I had 400 potential customers, I wouldnt import a container load. |

Be wary of any of those sellers who sell cheap items then suddenly start selling electronics or high end fashion items . Known scam for this to happen get rep up with items that are cheap then sell a heap of electronics they don't actually have.

If this item is legit and turns up, I'll take pics of how well it was packaged (usually a bit of a giveaway from the start), what it was like inside the package, and if it looks easy enough I'll lift the top off and have a gander inside to see what it looks like.
It's $23...as I said it won't break my bank, but I'll put in a dispute if it doesn't turn up. Think of it as me providing some consumer advice... |
