Seen petrol stations change brands (along with the local shops) many times over the years around here. BP seems to be the only constant

"We want to charge you lots to use the name we own"
"OK we'll change names and keep our money" Nice to see Ampol come back. Probably stands for "American Petroleum" or something like that...

The number of petrol brands in the 60s was amazing. Remember Neptune, Amoco, Plume, Burmah, Solo, Total, Golden Fleece, Atlantic, Esso etc. etc. We ended up with 4 major brands, Shell (mostly selling thru Woolworths), Caltex (many selling thru Coles), Mobil (selling thru 7-Eeven) & BP, plus many minor players & independents. I think Caltex Australia made the wrong name choice for the rebrand,
Assuming Caltex Australia still owns the Golden Fleece name I would have gone with that. |

Golden Fleece was the trade name of a different company, H.C Sleigh Ltd, based in Melbourne on the cnr of Bourke and Queen Sts. It's quite logical to return to the original name AMPOL as used before they merged with Caltex in 1995.

so to clarify is there 2 new trade names appearing next year. We appear to have 2 threads running about all this.
I see Caltex, Ampol, Golden Fleece, what will the big cities see?

Tell you what ...they pay big money for some of the old signage , placards , even oil drums and cans . The lighted signs can be worth thousands if they are in good nick ..

Ampol, the Australian Motorists Petrol Company, was incorporated by Sir William Gaston Walkley in 1936 in New South Wales.
This was in response to Australians' concerns about perceived inequitable petrol pricing, and allegations of transfer pricing by foreign oil companies to limit their tax liabilities in Australia. |
