I agree a national drivers licence is needed.
My nursing registration is national. How a national drivers licence would be implemented would be interesting.! https://www.facebook.com/22265760886...7237629825887/

What would be the difference to the driver between State and National licence? Would this stop people who lost their licence in Vic being able to get a new one in QLD?

What license?
I'm all for standardisation of driving rules and national license. As long as it's the VIC rules that go national |

Well...
We have; - National Passport Number - National Medicare Number - National Tax File Number - National Citizenship Number So yeah, national Driver's Licence makes sense, especially since we are slowly moving to a "digital licence" system. And while they are at it, I believe there should be national car registration numbers as well It seems ridiculous that you can have the same personalised number plate in 5 states ... Cars cross borders! I've been caught out myself, collecting fines for unpaid parking and toll fees, because someone from interstate came down to my state and the toll way cameras and stupid parking inspectors did not differentiate the "state" stamped on the number plate, and the rego number was the same as mine! Vehicles can still have "state based plates", but the alphanumerical rego combination on them should be drawn, and used only once from a national database. They tried It 20 odd years ago with heavy Vehicle (truck) Licences.
We all got a Purple (magenta) License With the Title "Australian Heavy vehicle Licence" But Now whilst they're still Purple they now just have whatever is the Home state of the licence Holder on Them... |

Having worked in numerous WA Government agencies in my past life, I can just say having an eastern states centric management regime never works well here but with uniform legislation and policies it always happens as the other states argue they have the majority of people cars whatever. And of course it's always too much trouble for the "wise men from the east" to visit WA and see what the rules and policies developed in the east mean in practice here. Our roads are different (generally less developed) and our rural population more spread out amongst other things.

YES. Make all the rules the same and cut the bureaucracy that runs it!
From a personal experience in the last ~10 years we have lived in VIC, TAS, QLD now NSW and I am so sick of having to change over for zero benefit. Throw in rego changes as well and its crazy. I guess the negative is if/when the system fails is all drops, but, you could still have states manage but overall data is collated?

Every drive is a competition; let NO one in, earn the space. If it even looks as if someone is about to enter the lane, or turn; speed up. Do not let any one in, ever. If someone misses their turn off, so what, take the next one, South Australian roads were designed on a square grid, you can always get back. People who let others in , slow down to create a safe driving distance, etc, wouldn't last long in SA and besides where's the sport in that? |

Really? In that case, I'm illegal as I have 2 current, paid up, driver's licenses. Both are mine, legally obtained and legitimate. Both are accepted as valid in Hawaii? One's Vic. The other from Japan. But I do have two, and I don't think I'm breaking any laws in having them. ;) Japan has individual 'states' licenses, but the road laws are the same everywhere. Driving there is less and more stressful than here because while you generally won't get a ticket for being a 'little' over the speed limit (and a little is variable term, from 10-50% over the posted limit), an awful lot of folks are really poor drivers and take the variable rules well past the speed limit, and start thinking stop signs and red lights are 'optional'... As much as the law breakers over there annoy me, it's nice to not have to worry about being 2km/h over unless you're being a moron. Also recommended to have a new-ish and well maintained car because if you're driving some jalopy at mach 3, you're going to get in big heaps 'o' trouble. Our car's cruise control only goes to 115km/h, but the newest one goes to 130km/h, more than any posted limit over there. Reflects what folks are actually driving at, not some draconian 'rule'. Still speed limited to 180, but baby steps... (And she wonders why I want to drag a Falcon over there. I'm not sure why I want to drag a GT-R over here though.) Stu. |

Oh, I'm pretty sure I got that. ;) Though I kinda wonder how getting a translation of my license would work out. Mrs. Schtoo was legally driving around with her original license and a translation for a few months, even exploited the loophole of gaining a fine but no points (now closed) but she now has only a Vic license, easily obtained by simply showing up at the appointed time and filling out a form. Japanese license is cheaper, but you do have to sit through a 1 hour lecture to renew it. 2 hours if you get a fine. Longer if you're a really 'poor' driver. The only time I had the long lecture was the first renewal, and only because I was a 'new' driver. Made almost everyone in the room blush (hey, it WAS Japan!) by calling them all out for being crap drivers and dumb enough to get caught at it as well. Also mentioned that if they were in the room I'd be inclined to take away their licenses until they're ready to grow up and drive properly. You've really got to be epically bad at driving to collect that many fines over there. Stu. |

Today's paper has another example of how those in the east are out of touch with WA and have an overinflated view of their own importance:

I want to know why 51% of Victorians thought they would be number 1?
Also why wouldn't east coast road rules work in WA? Are there specific rules that wouldn't work? Half of NSW and QLD is barren desert. |

As long as we don’t have to do those odd hook turns or whatever they’re called down in Victoria...

One of the biggest area of variation between states is motorcycle lane splitting see: https://www.shine.com.au/blog/motor-...l-in-australia
