Default Jaws ????

A MONSTER hammerhead shark caught off NSW's northern coast could soon become a Queensland tourism attraction.

Famed Hervey Bay shark hunter Vic Hislop has bought the 1200kg, 5m monster and this week transported the amazing catch to Queensland.

The huge shark made headlines in northern NSW last month when it was caught by a fishing boat four nautical miles off the coast of Evans Head.

It had eaten a smaller shark hooked by the fishing boat and then became trapped itself.

At 5m long, the shark is longer than a family car and could probably comfortably fit a few family members inside its massive belly.

Researchers estimate the shark was at least 40 years old.

Speaking to The Courier-Mail, Mr Hislop said he had not decided whether to house the spectacular specimen at his Hervey Bay shark show.

"It's a magnificent specimen that's for sure," he said.

"I haven't decided what I am going to do with it yet though.

"If I keep it there (at the shark museum) I will freeze it first."

Some species of hammerheads are on the global endangered list, but they are rarely implicated in attacks on humans.

Although that would be of little comfort to someone faced with a shark bigger than most Great Whites, the most feared of all sharks.

And Mr Hislop had even more chilling news.

"That's not the biggest one I've seen either," he said.

"I've caught bigger."

Real men catch sharks by throwing a tank of compressed air into their mouths and shooting it with a rifle. (the sharks mouth i mean)

Y'all know me. Know how I earn a livin'. I'll catch this bird for you, but it ain't gonna be easy. Bad fish. Not like going down the pond chasin' bluegills and tommycods. This shark, swallow you whole. Little shakin', little tenderizin', an' down you go. And we gotta do it quick, that'll bring back your tourists, put all your businesses on a payin' basis. But it's not gonna be pleasant. I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten. But you've gotta make up your minds. If you want to stay alive, then ante up. If you want to play it cheap, be on welfare the whole winter. I don't want no volunteers, I don't want no mates, there's just too many captains on this island. Ten thousand dollars for me by myself. For that you get the head, the tail, the whole damn thing.

why do people think thats a BIG shark ???
sharks that size are small compared to the larger sharks of the deep ocean
people have different opinions of vic hislop, good or bad
but i think u need to be crazy or have (u know wat) of steel to go play with sharks

its far from small........ but 5m hammerheads arent that rare, they sometimes cruise Stockton beach feeding on salmon. but as i said earlier, the camera angle makes it look bigger than it actually is

That is a massive hammerhead! I wonder if its a different type to a normal hammerhead?

I had an awesome fight with a 3 metre one (we estimate around 120kg) once off batemans bay for around an hour. Tried to tag him, but he tagged the line on the prop. Oh well...

Yeah there's a lot of conflicting debate on this -

Some say sharks in depleting numbers - others have increasing sightings and interactions.

Anyone involved with sharks; scientific researches, professional fishermen etc agree shark numbers are depleting.

The debate centers around what, if anything, we do about it.

ALL the professional fisherman I speak with (west coast) confirm increased sightings over the past years.

There have been increasing reported contacts more over the past years.

It is fair to say that there is no real agreement between parts of the communities on this.

Translation:

Anyone who can get grants or stipends from guilt ridden greenie obscessed governments to waste on some wild goose chase (wild shark chase) will agree with any finding that ensures their continued income.

Lots of professional fishermen up here don't seem to have any problems finding sharks either.

Yes the quota system introduced in 2000 has been successful and seen shark numbers increasing.

Thanks to those "who can get grants or stipends from guilt ridden greenie obsessed governments to waste on some wild goose chase (wild shark chase)."

More power to them.
