Hi all, ive had a job opportunity arrise for me in Perth. Now its a pretty good opportunity and if i was given it here in Sydney i would leap at it, however im not real big on a seachange. Ive just set myself up here with property, got some great friends, all my family is on the eastern side of the country etc etc etc so naturally if i do go for this position i am apprehensive about the move.

That all being said, i know absolutely nothing about perth. Google searches dont give me much to look at, except for jumping on the realestate websites for a look at pricing of furnished rental units etc (minimum 12month relocation) so id rather just pay someone elses mortgage off and ill have someone pay mine off over here. and the price difference is huge. i couldnt tell you exactly where the office is for this job, but i will be doing a lot of travelling (driving) to different sites.

what are the good areas in perth, the not so good areas, and just any real information about the city. I know nothing about it, never been, always wanted to (at least for a holiday), so yeah, sell this idea to me! a change is as always good as a holiday!

Man, if I had a job offer in Perth, I'd be there tomorrow. Remember, a change is as good as a holiday.

And if you don't like it, you can always come back.

And you dont have kids AFAIK (not that it should stop you but it makes things harder).

Head west! I moved to Tassie a few years back, it was great, was more for the other half but she got qualified in what she wanted and now we are back in VIC. It was a good experience and its very tempting to move back.

If you dont give things a go then life can be very boring IMO.

Good friends are forever, family will always be there and you make new friends in perth. If the coin is worth it you can always fly back once a month (or more, wait for the specials) anyway.

Beautiful women in Perth. Nice place to live, like Brisbane 10-15 years ago. You will have to learn all about the galant and almighty West Coast Eagles. A little more expensive to live being on the west coast but if you're prepared to Wait Awhile you'll enjoy it.

COME ON OVER BUDDY! You'll love it.
The traffic on our roads is dead compared to Sydney, with no tolls.
The people are friendly and the girls are stunning even if they are stuck up snobs.
Perth is super clean and most of the buildings & infrastructure like transport systems here are new unless your in Fremantle or Cottesloe and we are lacking in entertainment complexes, but Perth is building them slowly but surly, I think this will be your first impression, especially coming from Sydney - Our Zoo, Casino, stadiums and night life is nothing compared to Sydney.

Im not going to say which areas are better than others as im sure to offend someone, but if your workign North of the river, id suggest living North of the Swan River and same with the South of the River, you dont have to but I travelled from one side to the other a few years ago every day and the drive got to me every morning and evening. ALthough beign a Sydney Sider you might find it bareable.

Taxis are a problem too, over here. durign the day its easy to get one..by phone, but unlike Sydney trying to flag one down at night is hard. especially after midnight on a weekend and after the trains have stopped at 2am.

But yeh Im sure you'll like Perth, beautifull loooong stretches of beach, every thing is close and we have a botanical gardens that has been compared to Central Park. (I work there too so im more than happy to give you a behind the scenes tour)

Ive just stocked the fridge with beer mate, bring a stubby holder.

I spent 20yrs in the Navy, so every 4 or so years I found myself being moved around the country, my last 7 years were spent in WA and it was on the whole a great place to live. We built a house in Waikiki (Rockingham area) before the property market went stupid (4 bedroom place / 750 sg/m block for $95,000 but this was in 1994) which was only 10 minutes from some of the best beaches in Australia.

The only thing that we didn't like was the "tyrany of distance". You say that all your family is on the east coast, if you are a fairly close mob then you may find that keeping in touch (visits etc) will cost you big time - there's no real discount fares from Perth to Sydney (in fact it's actually cheaper to fly via Singapore than it is to fly direct)

Would we have stayed in Perth when I left the Navy - I think we would have but Family here in SA made the decision for us - I look back on that 7 years with a lot of good memories - hope my ramblings help you with your decision.

HLC I realy can't help buddy, I love Perth, but have lived in WA all my life and have only been out of the state three times in 30-odd years.

I guess it will depend on what you like ATM.
Being on the coast on a sunny Sunday arvo with a beer.....

As for places to live - its mad over here at the minute, I know a couple of poeple looking for rentals and they are finding it very difficult.

I love Perth, even though I haven't lived there since about 20+ years ago, I still visit every so often.
Given an equivalent job in Perth I would be there in a flash.

Well I was moved over to Perth from SA about 7years ago. I was only coming over for 3 monthes just top get to know my old man a bit better once i finished high school, As you can see im still here.

Perth is actually a small city compared to Sydney or Melbourne but there's still a lot to do there.

Heaps of restaurants and bars in Northbridge, Kings Park if you feel like going for a jog or just relaxing and Hillary's Boat Harbour for a good Sunday lunch with lots of entertainment.

Fremantle has the Little Creatures Brewery/restaurant, highly recommended https://www.littlecreatures.com.au/ and you can also visit these guys to let off some steam...http://www.lonerangers.com.au/

If you like going to the drags, there's the Perth Motorplex in Kwinana and if you like your BBQ ribs, try Tony Romas on Hay Street!

The Northern suburbs are my preferred area to live in.

i dunno to much about north of the river but theres alot of nice newer suburbs goin up all over the south, depending on how far from perth youd wanna be.

ohhh and if ya do come over join Perth Falcons club, great cruises and events on all the time..

You can live anywhere in Perth, and like all suburbs of Australia, they have there good streets and there bad streets. I am a Sydney Swans supporter and frequent Sydney alot and love it, just for a change. I would say it would be the same going the opposite way. We have great weather, but it does get hot and for long durations.
Means more beer drinking. If the money is great, come over and treat it like a working holiday?

Thanks everyone!!! No hard feelings but I can't stand AFL haha but if I do t have much else to go for then tht might have to change =P I use to know a bird from Perth and yeah she was stunning! Shame I lost contact! A lot of good points raises and I am getting more interested by the day. Still a bit nerve racking the thought of going over and knowing next to noone but I'm sure a few aff meets will change that!!! I'm going for a meeting next week with my potential employer to go thru with some more of the nitty gritty and relocation issue so see what comes of it! I just have to break the news to the missus haha

Another good thing about Perth is you can just about always get king hit when you're out on the town, and I live in Perth so I'm not just having a go.
Apart from that we have some great tourist destinations, great beaches and surf with some pretty good pubs.
The car scene is pretty good too, as far as where to live you're biggest decision is to live north side or south side.
Live on the same side of the river as your work because peak hour freeway over the bridges is a pain. Not as bad as Sydney but still a pain.

i came to Perth as a 13 year old from London quite a few years ago...have been back to London and travelled to most Australian cities. Have also been to other places around the world and besides Perth, I could only live in Melbourne. A few mates, some cold beers and a sunny Sunday afternoon...cant beat it. As others have mentioned, the distances are qute amazing, especially for the population, but I drove 400km today and did it in 4 hours. The South of the state is magnificent, and the north has a remote beauty that has to be seen to be believed. And it is true about the nightlife. but it is improving. Minds you, I am too old to care about clubbing any more :-)

How about giving the job a try for a few months before moving all the stuff over here.?

I can deal with problems in the pub/club scene lol my 4 locals coincidentally made it into the top 10 most dangerous pubs and clubs list recently released in NSW hahaha

Im from Perth and have lived in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. they all have thier good and bad points, Perth is hotter in summer than Sydney, has more flies and wetter in winter.
It is so easy to get around especially outside peak hour with no tolls in the whole state, cheap rego no yearly check.
The food is good ,beaches are on par with Sydney without the rocky headlands. The girls are smoking hot and tall.
You have the whole range of camping 4WD and fishing hunting etc
Off perth you have three Islands that are great in summer for boat trips/diving fishing surfing
Good areas are close to Fremantle, Northern beaches , City Beaches ,South Perth, Hills Area. My pick would be Fremantle - warmer in winter cooler in summer close access to north and south areas and city.

P.s can you get me a job and a lift over

Looking at it this way & just this way, if someone is paying more for renting your property, than what your paying for someone elses (Im guessing so, cause its sydney) & the expences on yours are being covered by the rent, do it, positively geared property is every investors wet dream......

Id say, do the sums on that alone, if its worth it go! Everything else is a bonus.....

Perth is thus-far the only place in Aus I've seen that can hold a candle to the gold coast. GC's Abundance of tool's not withstanding. automotive scene is pretty solid over there also.

...also the Perth has F&A humidity, people there say its hot but you can barely feel it compared to the eastern seaboard.

i wouldn't recommend fremantle unless you love traffic and being burgled, and supporting a rubbish team.
and you got another thing wrong, the beaches are BETTER in perth than ANY other Australian capital! Sydney has pooey yellow brown beach sand. HA!

Freo.. Rubbish team what you talking bout... sure we are a AFL state but you have the force, glory, wildcats, and some netball team if thats what floats your boat haha.

Perth very laid back must say our driving practices in the "peak" times is something to be ashamed about but hey not everyone is perfect. agreed there are some great spots to have a bevvie and good steak/meal, car scene here is good and as MGGT RAA said Perth Falcons is the go

i say if the opotunity is there give it a go, never know could always meet that girl you let slip years ago perth is a country town as they say everyone knows everyone pretty much.

Same. One of my favourite cities in the world. Relaxed, great weather, slower than Sydney, but still cool (Sunaday Sessions @ Fremantle are great in summer) and the women are A - Ma - Zing!
