Car scene is pretty big. Thursday night is big and most cruise down the beach on the weekend. We have some good car shows and had a street sprint last year, hope its on again this year cause its awesome to watch. There's also some great dirt roads outside rocky when there not stuffed by rain to have plenty of fun on, i do this to preserve my licence and get it out of my system lol. And we have some great fishing and crabing when the river isn't full of fresh and plenty of places around here aswell. Good luck with the move. |

Went to Rocky last year for a carshow/ sprint day at the show grounds and over whelmed by the amount of er.... um... bogans cruising the streets.
Certain suburbs need avoiding. (Been through and stayed at motels over years a couple of times) Its not a bad town really and has a few spots which are within an 1hr or two to visit. I dont know how well it coped with the flooding though as the media havent said anything about the recovery process, so be wary of flood damaged homes and cars on the market!

haven't sorted out where i will be living permanently up there yet. I have a couple of months of temporary accommodation to make up my mind so i will try and find somewhere that wont flood and isn't too dodgy!
Ive got nothing that id want to take near a dirt road at the moment but maybe in the work car

You'll love it...as with anywhere, if you want to be miserable, there's ample opportunity for you to do so.
Go for a run up and down Mount Archer...the speed limit is 40 up there, but you'll love the never ending corners...and there's usually no one around anyway...*cough*... You'll also been surprised by the vehicles that you see which people wheel out for runs on the weekend...there's a lot of money in the area, and people aren't shy about spending it on a "special car". I'd also highly recommend a nice drive consisting of going out of the city north, taking the Yeppoon turnoff, and then going along the tourist route along the cost from Yeppoon down through the other small beach communities like Emu Park and Keppel Sands, to come back in to Rocky from the other end of the tourist drive on Lakes Creek Road. About 110km in length, plenty of interesting views, and stop at Seagulls Seafood at Yeppoon for some fish and chips...you won't regret it. There's also a yearly "Classics By The Coast" car show at Emu Park (that's where it was this year anyway)...great show with lots of interesting cars. |

Ah glorious Rockvegas, country capitol of QLD.
Some say it is hole, others disagree but you may notice that when leaving Rockhampton in any direction you always have to go uphill........ |

Mate I'm in the All Classic Motor Club (ACMC) along with most of my family who are ford mad. Majority are older people (I'm 26) but are easy to get along with. In regards to car scene the first sat of every month there is a meet at Huish Drive which is pretty good and has a great veriety of tuff and nice cars. I try to make it along and all are friendly. Also coming up this weekend is the Rocky swap (ACMC is helping to run), then a fortnight after there is motormania again which is a week long event in CQ with different events. Also that weekend is a two day Hot Rod and Classic event which I am goint to attend the beach cruise. The ACMC has one of two things o monthly.
In regards to living probably stay out of Depot Hill (floods) and some of Koongal and Besreker (also floods). I am in Berserker, most is out of flood zone. Gracemere would suit to a Tee unless working in Rocky as traffic is getting bad driving in and out. Most areas in Rocky are ok all depends if your unlucky enough to have some rowdy indiginous in your street or bad neighbours as anywhere. Best to check out the street if there is a house you are interested in and introduce yourslef to the neighbours.

welcome to QLD .
only about an hour or maybe a little more back down the coast to the Benaraby drag strip near gladstone. a few good car shows getting going around gladstone area too. and gladstone swap meet looks like being a yearly event, ( its on the 14th aug this year so you will probably just miss it as well. )

Port Curtis resident here, I had a metre of water under the house but have 3 acres in town , so lots of cheap housing , and you get a flood1 in 20 years so I don't care for that argument much ...as said plenty of awesome cars up this way with the money , and its no more boring than the rest of the country ..lol. a towns what you make it, no more bogans or anything other dramas that happen elsewhere .. welcome to rockveges , and don't speed on the main road in its always got a camera on it
Ps gracemere is a dump ...the dregs are out that way :p

Rockhampton is okay. I moved there from Brisbane and lived there for 6 years. Originally hated it very much after living in the 'big smoke', but came to appreciate the slower pace they have up there.

you could do way worse than Rocky mate. everything you need is there without the bull$hit of a major city.
live in Rocky and work in the coal, why not live where the mines are? there's a fair bit of anti DIDO and FIFO sentiment out here in the basin at the moment. |

saddly no real circuit tracks in this part of the country.
closest professional style track i think would be qld raceway at willowbank (south west of brissy) or lakeside on the nothside of brissy i think has been reopened as a club track. the V8 supercars race at qld raceway and at a street circuit in townsville. there are a couple of clubs that run sprint races on properties and in car parks, etc. both gladstone and rocky have go-cart tracks and dirt speedway tracks. gladstone speedway are getting ready to build a new international grade track at benaraby next to the drag strip. there is also a motorcross track at benaraby.

I've actually just move from Mackay to Gladstone and in the process of buying an XR8 and wanted to see how many others there that are interested in clubs or if there is a club already formed here or Rocky. I was in the Ford Club in Mackay, but went downhill after no one really bothered to turn up or come on trips.
