Default 2001 AUII XR8 exhaust discussion

HI, i had a look through some old threads and most are several years old, thought i would start a new one.

Ok my old work chariot, the factory cat back twin system (with replaced centre mufflers) is soooo rusted it has no chance of passing rego. So looking at what options i have, i will be keeping the car for a few more years yet.
Looking around, the muffler shops here only seem to fit pre-fab exhausts, getting quotes around $850 for a single 3" exhaust fitted.

I do really like the twin system sound, but no one around here seems like they can be bothered. I get told your twin system has a balance pipe so its like a single system anyhow sound wise?

I have looked at this Manta twin 2.5" system online

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/161556789...84.m1423.l2649

Does anyone have this system fitted? and ifso, comments or possibly a video clip of it?

Or the same if you have a single 3"?

I am hoping to get it a little bit noisier again, the car currently has pacemaker headers, 200 cell cat converters, then feeding into factory cat back piping with lukey 12" ultra flow mufflers.

Check out FTW-302s build thread, he has used this system and by all reports is pretty happy with it.

I run the Manta twin 2.5 inch on the wifes xr8 220.
There is some options so I ordered with a rear resonator , being auto.
Gives a great note for the little Windsor. Not sure on the seat of the pants
result but would suggest some loss of low down torque.

I would have preferred only twin 2.25 inch as I believe this is all the 5.0L
requires. However nearly impossible to buy off the shelf and would have to be custom made.

Quality I found very good and all bolts up without any issues.

Also put the manta twin 2.5 inch system on my 250 pursuit ute.
Happy with this as well . Optioned for the rear resonator to keep
the noise down.

Will try and get a video clip of the wife's vehicle for you.

NOTE : Have found Manta to be very good to deal with.

Cheers

You could try running 100 cell cats too, if you want it a bit louder.

I initially had 200's but opted for the 100's for that extra noise. Quite noticeable.

Thanks for the replies everyone, loved reading FTW-302's build thread.

V8Falcons, sounds nice !! So your custom twin zorst, what size mufflers are you running and do you have a rear muffler/resonator?

They appear to be a generic M/S 2.5" straight through , cross pipe, no rear muffler... (Not being a daily its good for a weekend cruiser )although sometimes Id like it a little quieter around 60-80ks but on the highway you can hardly hear it in the cabin.

I bought the car recently through the forum..from Josh MADED ,he may know the brand of muffler..

I have dual 2.5 custom exhaust on my LTD 185kw, bit big for my motor, get a lot exhaust vibration at around 1000-1700rpm.
But it dosent drone.
I have no balance pipe just two individual sections with a muffler each side.

I had considered getting a similar set up for my AU3 V8 ute. Is it loud cruising around 60k's or out on the open road?

For a fairly stock LTD I wouldn't go any bigger than twin 2.25.

will back this up, if you want to keep it stock go the 2.25, mines stock at the moment and its too big, but whole top end to come this year and a 347 to come in hopefully the not too distant future

A single 3 inch would probably flow better than the stock exhaust with its super restrictive mufflers anyhow, not that im saying to get it because ground clearance may be an issue.
Ideally get a custom 2.25 twin with an x pipe 2 mufflers(centre) and 2 hotdogs(rear) i used to have a custom twin 2.5 with an x pipe and only 1 magnaflow muffler per side and it was a bit sluggy down low and sounded pooey and droned, was on a stock 220kw,was just too big for a stock windsor imo.
Ill say this though,it was the nicest symmetrical looking, shiny exhaust ive ever had on any of my cars, glad i never paid for it lol.

Soundwise it evens up the note between the 2 separate pipes and sounds alot better than a twin sytem with no balance pipe or x pipe, performance wise im not sure,i also had another 220kw xr8 with a twin system with no balance or x pipe and it was the worst sounding exhaust ive ever heard, almost like an old 253 thong slapper, very bad sound...

I'd wholeheartedly disagree with you re: the balance pipe.

My XR8 220 has a full twin 2.5in system with no balance pipe and everyone who has heard it says that the little 5.0 has no business sounding the way it does in my car. I'd have to agree.

I have pacey tri-y's, 100cpi cats and a single set of lukey glass packs.

How a person perceives/likes the sound of an exhaust is definitely in the eye of the beholder.
I have heard alot of different types of exhausts on efi windsors and imo i like a refined crisp sound, not overly loud and not too pooey or double plugger like...
Some people can have a super loud, crackly, thongslapper exhaust, absolute pollution to anybodys ears but their own and love it,as long as you like it,good on you, lol!

Erm, I assume you are talking to me. Everyone that has heard my car comments on how great it sounds. With no balance pipe. So thanks for saying my car only makes noise pollution, that's big of you.

I'll try to rustle up a sound byte.
