MELBOURNE'S main sporting bodies could join forces to shoot down the Holden airship.
Cricket Australia, desperate to stop the aircraft from invading Ashes air space this summer, will seek a meeting with the city's other major event organisers. The Ashes series is the latest event in the firing line of the 54m monster, with Cricket Australia sponsored by rival car company Ford. But officials are also concerned about the damage the blimp can cause to the Test match as a spectacle as the airship's shadow moves across the ground, as it did during last weekend's AFL Grand Final. Cricket Australia spokesman Peter Young said there were also safety issues for the players. "It causes a shadow to come racing across and if you've got Brett Lee roaring in at 160km/h, you (as a batsman) don't suddenly need Holden getting in your face," he said. AFL officials were frustrated as the bright red airship buzzed above the Grand Final, which is backed by Toyota. "It's un-Australian to try to sneak a free ride. If parasite marketers are allowed to suck the value out of major events without supporting them it raises a risk for the viability of major events," Mr Young said. Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland has written to every state sports minister asking for help to establish a ban on the airship flying over stadiums. The Victoria Racing Club, which hosts the Melbourne Cup and is sponsored by Saab and Lexus, has also sought assistance. But Airservices Australia said yesterday the Holden airship did not pose a safety risk and was well within flight guidelines. No-fly zones can be enforced only for security reasons or via aerial ambush advertising legislation, which was put in place for this year's Commonwealth Games. A spokesman for Victorian Sports Minister Justin Madden said there would not be time to pass that legislation for this year's Boxing Day Test, leaving CA to fight the blimp on its own terms. Mr Young said it was time the State Government began protecting the city's major events. He said CA would take matters into its own hands if it were not given protection in time for the first Test at the Gabba on November 23. "We can look at scheduling other aviation that forces the balloon to stay away. You could have a photographers' helicopter, whatever (for example)."

Interesting!
I guess if I was one of the major sponsors of the AFL I'd be more than a little ticked off that another brand within the same market was able to hyjack my major event! :yeees:

I was wondering what that shadow was. Normally they zoom right in on it, so you can see the hair on the pilots head, but not this time. Thought it was odd.
Should get a Ford Blimp in on the action. We can have a Blimp-off! Send the Ford Blimp to the NRL, who seem to love Holden! : Wouldn't Holden crack the sads! :hihi:

This airship is constantly flying over my freaken house on the weekend, just doing laps around in the sky. I live in a quiet area and I gotta say it is a pain is the a$$. Try and enjoy some quiet time and the view and all you get is this annoying drone and big red airship blocking everything. If CA don't shoot it down maybe I will - wonder how high a potato cannon can shoot?

If Ford were thinking of trying to match the Red Barron when the new model is released...
This might make them think twice about wasting the $$$$$$$! :1syellow1

Trust Holden to try get a free ride (pun intended). Never in the spirit of sportsmanship are they? Always looking for a way around.

Business do not spend millions on sponsorship so a rival company can freeload.

Did you notice that in the 2000 Olympic Games that Ansett had the full sponsership of the games, but on every ad there was Qantas advertising, a majority of people only saw Qantas and assumed it was the major sponser even the teams from other countries.....this helped contribute to Ansetts closure!
It is not freeloading! Its called market competition they are all ****ed off because they never thought of the idea first! At the end of the day the consumer will benifit through large company competition so I don't see the problem!

Terrorists already own the blimp. That thing f*cks me off too. Is it not possible to shot it down? And I'm serious. Surely you could get away with it, a silencer, back yard.. no witnesses? Ford should stick it to Holden at their events. |

Colossus thinks that we should leave the blimp alone - it will break down and fall out of the sky on its own merits - it is a "Holden" after all.

I think it's dirty of Holden to fly over major sporting events which are sponsored by other companies, but the skies are fair game. Until an official steps in, Holden are free to do as they wish. Not their fault if their marketing team has come up with another good idea.
Wish Ford could actually come up with something effective. |

It's lazy, uncreative, unimaginative marketing. Like the radio stations who hire helicopters to drag banners up and down the beaches in summer, spoiling the view, and making noise, pollution and kero smells. A noisy form of visual pollution. Below average marketing minds at work there.

Rumour has it the Holden Blimp suffers from piston slap and is using 1Lt oil every 100 nautical miles...Holden want it fixed under warranty however the blimp manufacturer said its within tolerances and that it's just the pilots perception..."they all do it".....the local Blimp rep also added if they fix his VY SS he'll put in a reco aero engine with a 3 month extended warranty....believe it or not....
