Hi there,
I've got a 2000 AU Falcon Futura 4 speed auto and I've noticed today that when I accelerate harder, the car starts to stutter ( not a lot put slightly ) and doesn't pick up speed smoothly anymore. It becomes very obvious when I go above 2800 or 3000 rpm. 140000 km are on the clock and I bought it 2008 with 125000k's. First thought ( of course ) was spark plug , ignition leads or even the coil pack because I don't know when those things have been replaced by the previous owner. I've also noticed a difference when I park the car in neutral or park and rev the engine a bit , it stutters the first moment and then it is ok. But everytime you pound the foot into the carpet , it struggles and stutters and then it goes all normal again. If you want to take of from the traffic lights a bit quicker , you can also feel in the very first moment of acceleration a struggle and like a misfire ( when the engine is under load ) and then it is ok for a blink of an eye and when I reach the 3000 rpm mark it struggles again slightly. But my second thought was if it also could be the fuel injection or even something else more expensive ? I tried to find similar posts here, but my computer was freaking out and didn't spit out any search results. I hope you can help me out here and if you think it is a safe bet on the ignition system, I'd like to know how much a coil pack is ( roughly ). Ignition leds are about 80 bucks and spark plugs about 30 . Thank you guys for any ideas and help The Moose |

I would go Plugs, Leads, Coilpack ($90) and then if no change, Catalytic Converter.
If no change, then perhaps look at the filter sock in the fuel tank. All the best with it! GK

sounds fuel related to me. when was the last time your fuel filter was replaced? Your fuel pump could be on the blink too. Is the car on dual fuel?

A take off early stutter is auto related. Dirty and contaminated trannie fluid causes this.
Apart from that being higher up in the rev range its probably ignition related. AZZA

Hi guys...
thanks for the quick answers.... @blueoval The fuel filter was replaced only 4000 km ago and the car is not on dual fuel @azza11 The idea with the trannie..yup, a trannie fluid change is overdue I guess..can't get to it though..too busy @ GK The falcon eats spark plugs anyways. I have never changed them and I dunno when the previous owner did. Luckily it is pretty inexpensive when it comes to the parts. By the way...whats the best and easiest way to get to the coil pack ? Take off the air intake hoses ? To ensure that I am not mixing up the leads, I'd do them one by one, although it might take a bit longer. Thanks The Moose |

My order:
plugs leave it a few days full tank of ultimate and a bottle of injector cleaner leave it a few days leads leave it a few days auto service leave it a week or two fuel sock leave it a few days clean TB/ISC leave it a few days coilpack or injectors changed/cleaned, i can't decide leave it a few days do the other whichever you did first leave it a few day fuel pump leave it a few days if all of that fails, come back to us and we'll collectively scratch our heads

Plugs and leads for sure (or coil, so maybe not for sure). Or a fuel issue. Start with plugs and leads as they are the cheapest items to replace, and at 140k, they are probably due anyway.

I know this is the bleedin' obvious and I don't want to insult you but when was the last time you changed your air filter cos a severely blocked air filter would cause those symptoms as well. Followed anyone up a dirt road lately?
