Hi everyone, new to the forum. I own a 99 cougar which I love to bits however maintainence and parts have been tricky. Can anyone recommend a good person to deal with in Brisbane or sunshine coast? No one here seems to share my passion, even the ford guys just groan when I go in.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated! CougarGirl |

Welcome to our little place on the net you will be pleased to know we are here to help and that you are not alone....
The trick to owning a Cougar is to find yourself a good mechanic who knows what he is doing and doesn't rip you off. Suggest you ask a few friends and relatives who are car heads and see if you can track someone down. Generally speaking mechanics do not like working on Cougars because they are relatively complex front wheel drives. What I do is take my car to my mechanic and ask him what parts I need and then order them form here... http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/rafr...0&model=COUGAR This company is in the USA and is very reliable and CHEAP the only problem is that the parts take about a week to get here but they will be delivered to you by FEDEX so I get mine delievered to my office. If you can't wait that long then you can also get parts from heree... https://pontiworld.com.au/usgmsp/ This company is in Australia but they don't have a full range of parts but they are very helpfull and will get anything you want. They are of course more expensive because they have to pay duty & GST. If you are going to order from rockauto remember to keep it under A$1000.00 then you won't have to pay import duty or gst. The main thing to remember is to stay away from Fraud Delears as they will overcharge for everything parts and labour. So welcome aboard......post up some pics and let us know how you get on.

Thanks very much for the response.
I've managed to get my hands on a rear engine mount but am desperately chasing the passenger mount. Starting to seem impossible! Are there any probs with the US parts fitting the Oz cars? Even Ford cant get this part they tell me.. |

Hey Guys
I'm really hoping someone can help me out a little again. I am most definately not mechanically minded whatsoever! My mechanic has told me I need to replace my rear and front left engine mounts. I have the rear engine mount I ordered through a Brisbane parts guy but totally confused with the passenger side. I am thinking of going through pontiworld.com.au but confused with their parts list as to what exactly I need. The link to the page is https://pontiworld.com.au/usfordsp/i...984781ddb48e7a Can anyone tell me the difference between the part priced at $47.38 and the part at $39.83??? Do I need both? I need to get it sorted ASAP because unfortunately it isn't sounding great at all! Thanks so much in advance guys! I really appreciate any help/advice you can give! CougarGirl P.S I did check out rock auto as well but it seemed strangely cheap to me at only $8.10 - Am I missing something here as well? |

They look like the same part to me...??? What I would do is ring them up during business hours (they only answer in the morning because they ship all their orders out in the afternoon) I know because I have bought stuff from them.
The price from rockauto is the right price it is just the difference in buying on line from the USA.

G'day, can anybody tell me where I can get a Clockspring for a '99 Cougar asap?
I've rung a local Ford dealer; I was told unless it's onshelf in Ford Campberfield (Vic) it could take a month... he also told me that the only way I could find out availability is to actually order it and pay for it (no matter how long it takes!). They also want $250 for it. They're on eBay USA for ~$28 (+ freight) so $250 seems a bit rich! The part number in hand (off my car) is: 98BB-14A664-AC ... but a google search for Cougar clockspring brings up 98BB-14A664-AB... The local Ford dealer told me the part number according to his system is F8RZ-14A664-AA... Hopefully they're all interchangeable... Help!! |

So I've just found out that Pontiworld can't help me :( I am in desperate need of a front left engine mount for a 99 Ford Cougar manual. If you know of anyone selling one can you please please let me know. If I can't find this part my other half is fed up and ready to take it to the wreckers!
I've looked and asked rockauto but they have nothing listed under the ford cougars, they have an engine mount listed under the Mecury's but they can't tell me if it will still fit (they don't think they can...) Arrow - Do you know the difference or if these mounts will still fit? |

YES.....the mounts will fit. Our cars are known as Mercury Cougars in the USA it is my experience that anything ordered as a Mercury Cougar part from rockauto will fit our cars. What you should do is order both engine mounts and the transmission mount and get them all done at the same time cos oi one goes the others won't be far behind.

Hi Cougargirl, The easiest way when your looking for parts is to go to rockauto ,then click on mercury then on cougar then the year of your car, all the parts that come up will fit your car,the only difference being there's are left hand drive

What Dave said is true. Most of the Mercury cougar parts suit our cougars. People at Rockauto cannot guarantee on compatibility as their knowledge on our cougars is minimal. I would advise to order that part and give a try. If it doesn't fit you can always send the part back and get a refund. Shipping wont be refunded though. Its better than sending car to wreckers. Our cougars share same engine, gearbox and subframe from mercury cougar so it should fit. Give a try. Its not that hard to find a mount. You always find an aftermarket mount for any kind of alien car. Do let me know before you give up, I will give some contacts who are not into these things but am sure they will help you out with my reference.

So a bit of an update - I ordered a passenger side mount from rock auto last week which turns out to be the wrong part altogether.
I've now been able to grab my other half to help me pull it apart a little and this is what we found. The passenger mount is not just 'not good' but actually came out without any tools. The pics below are of the mount as we found it, without the insert then individual shots of the inserts. The bracket itself is good but I really need to source the insert as the pin/screw looks like it's snapped off altogether. Can anyone point me in the right direction for this part? |

So the problem is not the engine mount....this is something else. So as I understand it is on the passenger side underneath the air cleaner box.

Yes passenger side under air. Mechanic has said it's the mount. When we pulled it out it seems to be the pin that's running through the rubber mounting block that's snapped.

On Oz Cougars, Engine mount will be on driver side and its the gear box mount that will be on the passenger side. On US Cougars, Engine mount will be on the passenger side and gear box mount will be on the driver side. Would you be able to post a pic of the part you have ordered from Rockauto for our better understanding. Your mechanic should guide you properly with parts terminology. All you needed was top or side gearbox mount, not engine mount. Also the part that is snapped can be repaired. Mount busing looks fine. All you need to do is to drill out the snapped bolt and put a new one, incase if you cant fine a replacement. Am sure you can find one.

If you only need the bolt through the center you may be able to get it from the wreckers. The Wreckers in Smithfield (Mazda and small Ford Specialists) wrecked a Cougar recently. If you are not in the Sydney area try a wrecker near you most could track the part down.

On another tack, is the threaded section on the bottom of the pin or is it a broken bolt that tightens into the pin??? If the bolt screws into the pin then maybe it can be removed and a new bolt used. If the threaded section off the bottom of the pin is sheared off then a machine shop could bore a new hole in the pin and tap a thread in it and supply a new bolt!!!

My advice from the USA is that this part is an upper transmission mount where the bolt has snapped off. Will try and get the the right part number for you.

@Dave: I think she mentioned it as manual.
@CougarGirl http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/99-00...#ht_500wt_1182 Contact seller and see if he can ship it to Australia or there is another way to buy items in US. Dave knows better about it I think. You might not need the whole assesmbly. Just use the mount part. It is a used part so confirm the condition with seller before you bid. Buy using paypal, you will be covered. Incase if it turns out to be damaged, paypal will refund you. cheers,

The news from the USA is all bad as it appears this part has been discontinued I checked on Rockauto and Team Ford who are the two on line parts suppliers that I use from the USA and they do not sell it any more.
Time to get desperate now. 1/ Speak to your mechanic and see if he can fix the old one with a suitable size bolt. 2/ Check with your local Fraud dealer and see if he can find one for you (you never know) 3/ When I had my accident and had to replace the front headlights and I found them on ebay UK, actually this is a good source of parts as UK Cougars are very close to ours in that they are right hand drive and converted for European conditions like ours, and as long as you pay via paypal you will be OK. The only difficulty is sometimes finding someone who will ship to Australia. If you search carefully you will find places that are wrecking whole cars so just ask them and you will be OK. The part you want is the upper transmission mount for a manual. Stick at it and you will track one down I am sure and let us know how you get on. I know it is a bit of mucking around but it will be worth it in the end.

The advice from the USA is to try for option no.1 if at all possible as this will be the cheapest and easiest fix for you.

Dave is right, I have checked my workshop manual and all you need is the right size bolt, check out big hardware stores, but your mechanic should know where to get one from.
