What if?

Hi guys, with Fords slow sales number of late, it got me thinking about the future of the company is Aus, what brand would I buy if I had to buy new if Ford were no longer? The thought then came to mind, what if Ford Aus never existed? No Falcons, Escorts, Cortinas, things we here all love.

So the question is… If Ford Aus had never been around, where would your alliance be? Do you think you would own a Holden right now? Would you be in a Subaru? I’d love to hear what other automotive brands you feel passion for.

Perish the thought, but would I be in a HSV or some type of Commodore right now if it wasn’t for Ford Aus?

With no Ford available, I would be in a Charger or Pacer or Monaro or HQ Statesman. I would still not like Euro/rice rubbish.

Holden without a doubt. No brainer.

In saying that, if I had to look elsewhere, Subaru would be my next pick.

Obviously without a Ford to consider - the next option in the reasonably priced car range that offers good performance, would have to be a Holden or a HSV - no brainer really.

If Falcon/Territory production ceased but Fords were still made in Australia I would still consider Fords.

If they closed the assembly plant and manufacturing facilities I would never buy another Ford again. Most likely I would go to Holden, but it would depend on what my needs were in a vehicle at the time and what manufacturers offered the product I needed/wanted.

If Ford Australia never existed, it would be highly unlikely that GM Holden would still exist in its current guise. Even more unlikely that they'd be producing a RWD large car in Australia. They would most likely be an import company like Ford would be in your hypothetical situation.

We would have had RHD versions of all the Euro & US Fords here over the years, and may have even had the Ford/GM rivalry, but not Aus Ford & Holden rivalry.

We still would have had Escorts & Cortinas, only they would have been imported.

At any rate, I'd be in whatever I like the look of best. Performance is irrelevant on modern roads and everything goes the same speed in a traffic jam.

I would be sad if I didn't have my XB Coupe, but I'd probably have a 67 RS Camaro instead.

I would continue to do what I've always done, assess a car on its merits and buy accordingly.

If Ford go, maybe GM will too. Or they will simply push on and have no real competitor.

If it were me, Something from the Chrysler ranks would suit me fine.

I'd jump onto the euro bandwagon and get a HSV. :p

I would look seriously at a HSV GTS (especially since the interior looks so much better than previous series).

But as has been mentioned above, I'd look around and see what other manufacturers have to offer at the time.

I would probably just buy a Subaru Liberty. I would prefer to support local manufacturing but the only reason I would tolerate the poor quality control and cost-cutting of newer Falcons is because they are a dream to drive and a great cruiser, whereas the Commo is not.
