is it just me or do other people dislike the way v8's sound now day's
What I mean is the raspy popping sounds not the deep old school v8 sound like the old clevo;s and even the ls's used to sound good now they also have that raspy exhaust note. I heard a 4.6 powered mustang the other day and it sounded great had that deep old school note then saw a late model mustang and it had that annoying new sound. is it just me? |

Agreed, the 6.4 Hemi sounded the best (Stock) out of my 8's but the rest raspy.

X5 BMW went past me a few years back, sounded like a sewing machine. Went past it in old xe351 at next roundabout, people actually turned heads.

I'll probably get blasted for saying this but I totally agree with your observations, late Ford engines included. It's a bit like Kylie singing an AC/DC song ,it still sounds a familiar tune, just really lame. maybe the only exception is a late Hemi or the occasional LS.

To me it's mainly the late model miami and coyotes that sound ***. A decent exhaust in a Ls and they sound awesome, the old 5.4 boss motors sound old school with a decent exhaust.

If you're judging with modified exhaust there's nothing wrong with a Miami that's had the proper parts put on. Comparing stock to modified will almost always go in favour of the modified sound.
The good thing about v8's is even the more average sounding ones are still better sounding than a 4 or 6.

G'day , No modern V8 sound is rated versus the old girls for sound in my book..I've watched this video heaps of times JUST for the pure sound of that pure 351...Nothing beats this..He calls this 'beautiful noise'...He's right ...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kpEmcuYXak Cheers Rod...

I wonder if SS exhausts have anything to do with it?
Obviously SS is a lot more popular today than yesteryear.

I think it's got a lot to do with the Crossover (merge) pipe that gets added for the additinal torque.
twin system all the way gives that great old school sound, but you loose 20+Nm mid range As for the crackling and popping, they all add fuel intentionally to give that sound now via FI tuning (just like piping engine noise or playing artificial noise through the stereo) - Use to be excess fuel, a by product from the best compromise tuning the carby, now it's intentionally done for "character" |

I think firing order has a part to play. My dad and I used to play a game when you could hear a distant v8 to guess whether it was ford or holden. The Cleveland's definately sound best.

So many factors that go into how a V8 sounds...
Firing order, compression ratio, push-rod versus DOHC, cross-plane versus flat-plane crank, exhaust layout (H-pipe versus X-pipe), forced induction versus naturally aspirated etc... In my opinion, the best sounding V8's are always naturally aspirated... 351 Cleveland, 427 Cobrajet, 426 HEMI, 454 BB Chevy, M159 AMG, Audi 4.2L FSI, Ford 5.2L Voodoo to name a few

That's the prettiest way of converting fuel into noise....short of the Saturn 5 rocket program ! I think I just had a religious experience Late model stuff struggles to compete with that sound. Multi valve heads,NVH requirements to keep the cashed up metro puppies happy, emissions requirements all make them sound errr, well I won't say it. I grew up on these old girls, they are still the benchmark of what is tuff in my book. Clevo,Hemi, BBC,name your flavour they are all iconic Last edited by XByoot; 30-04-2017 at 07:20 PM. |

After my stereo stuffed up in old XE, mate told me to put in a new one.
Told him don't need to, when you have an 8 cylinder symphony conducted by Cleveland, that's real music. |

APSA... scroll thru to about 5min 50 sec...Tony Oconnor's XD,with pretty well named QLD plates,NUT378,it's a NA Clevo headed deal running 8.5's. The old XD ,XE do pretty good. The next run is a 8.9 ,you can hear him back it off when he's got it in the bag. There's another run where he really makes big rpm if I can find it. He had a fair bit to do with the head work on the blue XE as well. |

I believe a lot of the difference is in the amount of HP the engines now produce as well. A modern engine typically makes twice the power of the equivalent sized old school donk and alot of that is to do with cam profiles and induction setup. Modern ECUs' keep these new engines under control and smooth out the rough idle and cantankerous manners that an old school carby fed - dizzy controlled fire breather had 20-30 years ago. Those old enough to have been there would remember an angry 500+hp RWHP clevo or 350 being a crisp, growling, angry sounding monster that was a bitch to drive on the street but would make the hair on the back of your neck stand up when it was unleashed. Those engines never had the deep rumble we all love to hear because they were so highly strung.
Yes, the aural aesthetics is somewhat manufactured these days and yes, modern tech and advances in exhaust dynamics all play a part but I believe you'll never get any V8 above 300kw to have that deep reverberating rumble we all love simply because they are making so much power the whole character of modern V8 engines precludes that deeper and somewhat softer sound of the lower HP and slower spinning old school engines.

I reckon the 5.4 sounds great. X force exhaust and running 267 rwkw so over 300 fly wheel... Sounds deep to me...

I think the modern V8's do sound nice. Havent really heard any nice Miami 5L's as of yet, well not in person anyway...
had a blown 5.4 Pursuit that had with a twin 3in hotdog / single muffler setup from Manta that sounded pretty horn. The cammed LS motors sound really nice too with a good exhaust

Our strict epa regs are the problem. Drove a lhd us mustang and it sounded killer, then drove an aus market one and it was much quieter. Our exhaust noise regs suck.

The miami engines have no bass or hum to them. All supercharger.
The boss 5.4 sounds fantastic in my opinion. They have some bass and a real howl to them. Listen to the 5.4s in thks clip on the dyno as opposed to the miami engines. Heaps better sound http://www.fullboost.com.au/fb/index...-dyno-day-aps/ |

The Miami are not all supercharger, sure is a whine, but is a sound what my local Jax manager who has a Commodore SS describes as ANGRY.
Attached is mine going round turn 1 at Marulan-and a delayed full throttle cause I had traction control off and the rear kicked out early- but for a standard exhaust sounds pretty good to me, actually for bog standard surprisingly good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVbKHzKuLNo I love Cleveland 351s, but a bog standard XE with a 351 sounded pretty average. Worked ones with cam and exhaust- bliss. Same as the Miamis, have you heard one with twin 3 inch Mantas with hi flow cats- absolute mongrel- sure different high tech racing bark but mongrel of the same magnitude to a racing Cleveland Mongrel.
