The most random thing happened.
I was at home at 8.30 tonight, i heard the phone rang (at my parents house where i live), i picked up and i hear 'this is a telstra voice Txt message ect ect message: 'I f''n crashed my car and i have a huge chunk outa my leg'. Ok. Random. I got the persons number and messaged them saying, ok, i dont have your number and neigher do my parents. Who is this? They replied an hour later 'James'. 'ok this sounds suss, i know many people named james!' i replied. We think its a telimarketing scam or something so we call back and a hospital answers asking if we can donate money. but we havent called yet. Any one else have calls like this? |

you realise that you could have just been charged $49 per minute for ringing the number you just rang.
that IS the scam. |

I find it highly unlikely that any telemarkter or similar would do something THAT low.

Parents dont want me to. If he replies im going to reply through TXT saying 'go tell someone who cares and take your charitiys elsewhere' or around those lines. Who would do that and not say the last name. James is in the top 10 most common names. :S |

I tend to agree that you will be charged premium rates if you do return the call.
The telecommunications ombudsman loves to hear about scams like this. It's a variation on the old scam where they send you a text message telling you to urgently call a number. You then get charged $100+ a minute when you call it. |

Could be a scam.
I had a similar thing happen. I was sitting at my desk here on the net and my mobile rang once before whoever rang hungup. So I looked at the number and didn't recognise it and thought this is a bit fishy. So I googled the number (Could have been a business listen somewhere) and found out that alot of other people where getting called by that number and when you call back you get a recording trying to sell you something.

Well, would it be a good idea to post these numbers for other members to see?
And if its a scam, do we have a right not to pay any stupid bill, if we call this number? |

It's a claimed emergency so advise the police of the details - they will deal with it one way or another and if it is a hoax or scam someone might end up in real hot water.

Well, they only said 'james' Yeah it was strange because it came up with a number like 13927572894 or such and it was a txt message to my home phone, so that doesnt really help, il type the mobile number in google if it has happened to anyone else. But yeah we usually dont get numbers when people call, which is stranger.. |
