As a christmas present to W.A. motorists, the W.A police are going to bombard motorists. ie they are going to have SEVEN speed cameras over 70kms (1 EVERY 10KMS) and a booze bus. Today Tonite 22/12/2006.
So, you could get 7 speeding tickets over 70kms by being just over the speed limit. And the W.A police say "IT'S NOT REVENUE RAISING" if it is not, then is it pr to make them look like they are doing something about the road toll? When is education, driver training etc going to be factored into reducing the road toll?????? : |

Halfway point of the financial year - the state governments need their mid-year cash bonus!

also probably the fact we've hit 200 deaths this year, 10 or so in the last 2 weeks
yes better driver education is the way, but right now, they have to crack down on drivers. although 7 speed cameras is a bit excessive also: Quote:
but seriously if more people die on the roads this xmas, with so many police out there, maybe the politicians will finally realise that driver education from the very beginning really is the solution... unlikely though... |

A crackdown on some driving schools might also help.
I was cruising on the freeway last weekend at the usual 100 and a girl learner driver passed me at least 10-15 over and the instructor was sitting right next to her saying nothing. By the time my brain said get the number etc etc they were too far in front. Talk about giving her the wrong message. |

You'd only need 6 cameras in a row with double demerits. The 7th one would not be necessary as you would not be driving as you'd be handing over your license.

Wouldn't you only be penalised the highest speed you were doing if you got done at all 7 speed cameras??

Driver education will never stop hoons, tired drivers and plain bad luck. After we hit 200 deaths on the road, I'm glad to let the police do what ever they want with the Booze buses and speed cameras. After driving down to Bunbury last week, I can't believe some of the ******* that are on the roads.

Nothing will compare to how many radar I seen when heading to the last Summer Nats from Sydney. I counted 26 or 27 parked in the middle of the freeway from the Servo at Goulburn to the federal interstate. Dont know if thats good Tax Paying Dollars? Wonder if Today Tonight look at that in 2 weeks?

We hit 200 deaths on the road’s so what does that say about all the tuff new laws and the current methods they are using.
Maybe it isn’t working, maybe cracking down on everybody won’t do anything except **** the good drivers off who are getting frustrated buy all the Bulls**t, and in the end they re the ones who will suffer, the Guy doing 125km/h wile overtaking a slower car on a quite country road will get booked but the guy who does 180 in a 50 zone down the backstreets a 1am gets away with it. Some system they run. |

I applaud it. The stretch in question was on South West Highway. Regula travellers of that Highway will know that it is plagued by ****wits who ignore the 110 -> 90 -> 80 -> 60km/hr through the small towns that dot it.
Anyone who is stupid enough not to realise after the second camera that they are doing a sting is a ******* idiot and deserve to get raped. Now fair go I travel that road a lot and I do in certain circumstances cruise at 10k over the limit (it's a fairly decent highway for its age and location). And yet I still get passed by other motorists travelling much faster, even 100km/hr "speed limited" semi's. Congrats to them on the pro-active policing of that stretch. If only they could apply it everywhere else! |

The next step is governments leaning on manufacturers, like they did with the LJ Torana V8 and big block Falcons.
Idiots dont wake up, they'll stuff it for the rest of us. Forget, power not being the problem with drunks etc, logic wont enter the debate, ask a Territorian. |

We are starting to tread that fineline between reasoned debate & unreasonable cursing about a road safety campaign that is well and truely ingrained into the rest of Australian motoring culture.
Try and keep this thread positive lest it become just another casualty in the road safety war that simply can't be won by swearing, and cursing on an internet forum. |

Don't sit "just over the speed limit". If you know they are going to be there, drive below the speed limit. Simple.

Just to remind all the WA people.... We have way more police on the road this year, I have been spotting marked cars every 5 minutes, all over the city and suburbs. Especially on the Roe Hwy on ramp from Frwy South, that 100km/hr bit of road thats marked as 80km/hr . Cruise control is getting a workout anyway.

This is all leading up to the introduction of the compulsory on board GPS/hotspot speed recording and reporting devices. The technology is available and is well proven. The revenue that these devices will raise is mind boggling. Too much for a governemnt to ignore. Cars on the road numbers will drop, public transport useage will go sky high..... The greenies love this concept as fuel usage will also drop with the associated polution drop. It will be a win win win for the government and a loose loose loose for the driving enthusiast....... :eclipsee_

They always say they need to find a new way to reduce the road toll, so they just increase the penalties on their existing policies. :
The reason SA doesnt have double demerit points on public holidays, because it doesnt work.... If you get caught speeding on the same road on the same trip by more than one speed camera, you can take it to court and win as it is techniquely only 1 offense.

I think the government needs to rethink the amount of speed zones .
I live about 13ks from work and travel through 11 different speed zones getting there, (50,40,50,60,90,80,60,70,50,40,50) gets a bit confusing, then throw a fix speed camera into the mix adds to the confusion. so if I dont relise the time of day for school areas or have a concentration lapse the chance of being booked is pretty high. as for WA residents you should be happy with your tax dollar working for you creating more dollars

i don't know what all the fuss is about, you obviously speed (or are planning to speed) if you are that concerned about it. i personally think it's great that people can lose their licence. might teach some speeders a lesson or two!! Cameras are only a voluntary tax. if you want to pay it, it's upto you! |

FACT : Q has seen the road toll rise since they were introduced. 2006 is going to be a record year of deaths on our roads. Sad too say. Also a W.A. study has shown that the majority of motorists booked by cameras ,are JUST over the limit. The motorists causing the carnage aren't. |

Other than more speed camera's and more points and more fines, what exactly are state governments doing to reduce the road toll. This is an honest question......... : I would like to know.

How many people who lose their license continue to drive? you might be surprised. Remember the other day, a thread was made about 3 youngins getting killed on the Sunshine Coast in one accident? The local paper has a couple of guys claiming to be mates of theirs done for drink driving, unlicensed driving, and they blame the recent grief. In the same article , the boyfriend of the survivor of that accident was pulled up for drink driving and unlicensed too. At the bottom of the article, there is some hope I guess. Or were they the converted anyway? Heres a couple more articles from the last week. The first one a breakdown of the week past. People arent getting the message. Or worse still, because many just dont care, driver training isnt going to stop this mess. None of it matter anyway, it cant happen to me. Im invincible. Its not just driver training, thats only part of the solution. They need much more enforcement, and plenty more police in cars, pulling people over without sacrificing the other areas of police work, and yes, cams catching the foolish. Its gonna cost money, and if people are silly enough to get snapped by Kodaks, and that can help pay for it, I dont care. The fight is to get governments to put the money to that use. It comes from roads and policing, it should go back to roads and policing. Last edited by fmc351; 24-12-2006 at 03:14 AM. |
