Hi,
I'm only new to these forums and I'm not sure if this thread is in the right section, so if it is, please move it to the relevant section. I have recently purchased an AU III XR8 sedan and I was just wondering if anyone knew how many of these were made as because they are a hand-built engine, I was told only a limited number were made (don't know how true this is). Cheers in advance. |

Not true. Very unlimited. Couldn't give you a figure though.

I heard a rumour that there were only around 3,000 XR8's produced over the entire course of the AU run (covering all 3 series').
Not sure how true it is though, but you don't really see that many AU XR8's out there, mainly XR6. Head on over to the AU section and head to aufalcon.com, would love to see some pics.

doesn't sound right thought there where plenty made no build number plates are there? That would denote limited run

There were more then 3000 built across the 3 models... God they build up to 1000 GT / GTPs a year and XR8s were pretty popular in the AU days with no Turbos to contend with!

AU XR8's are not 'rare', 'special' or 'limited' in any way. Nice cars? Yes. Rare or limited? No.

I think 3000 wouldn't be far from wrong... I heard that in the 80's/90's ford were selling around 80,000 falcons per year. Then in 99/2000 (AU series) sales dropped to 10,000, the AU falcon is said to be the Ugly Duckling, the car that killed the falcon... I have a black series 2 XR8. It's by far the most reliable car I have ever owned. In 20 to 30 years these will be worth big bucks. No way I'm selling mine!

I'm not 100% sure of the numbers I shared, but I was reading in in a Top Gear magazine around 3 months ago, the article was about the death of the Falcon. I would be interested to see the story again. I was amazed at the drop in sales from the XD to the AU. Seems to me Ford has planned it's way out of production in Aus, but I don't blame them with the cost of producing cars here. All Government vehicles should be Aus built, our Gov should be the first to support local industry. If Ford were to build GT coupes, dual cab falcon utes, and a sport wagons of some kind, they would sell them!
