Default Registration for UK imports in diff states are a BAITCH!

Was looking at buying this escort from Brissy... its unique and all. good price. completely original and stock apart from wheels and lowering.

Yet cause its an import from the UK there are so many hassles. IE...

there is no compliance plate cause it wasnt built to AUS standards.
i may have to get an engeeneers certificate which could cost 250+

Not to mention other problems.. why is it so hard.. i can imagine insurance would be just as bad.

If it hasn't been complainced don't touch it

99% it won't be able to be registered ever.

What year escort are you talking about?
I've got no idea about other states, but in Vic you can register imports without compliance IF they have already been registered in another state (as it had to meet there rules already), you just need proof of registation.

Also some Imports are(were) exempt from having a compliance plate fitted (latter model cars) as long as they met some simple updates to local ADR's which were inspected by an engineer. the car your'e looking at might have already gone through it but not have a plate fitted?

Anyway that might be the inspection you need, if so its a pretty simple affair. I had to go through it all with one of my old RX-7's. It was only seatbelts and the windscreen in my case as they didn't have the ADR stuff on them. The engineer inspected the car in a way a roadworthy tester does, taking closer note to a few things then hands you a form to give the rego guys.. it wasn't a full engineers like for a modified car or anything.
$250 sounds cheap to me and if its already been through a test & registered it shouldn't need anything to be done to pass this test.

Insurance on imports does suck though... they sting you a few hundred just because it's an import before they even look at what type of car it is :-(

One of the many reason i'm driving a Fez an not another import :-)

My only real advice is get ALL the info first, i know of guys that have gone through with buying an import and never gotten it on the road, but my self and many others have done it without hassle once we found out what was needed.

nah.. not worth the hassle...i got all the details i needed and that was sweet. but insurance was the main killer. Just cars wanted 5g.

Shannons wouldnt insure me cause apparently i needed 2 years experience with the same power type.... lol.. the car only has 135bhp... 35 more than my fez has.. hahahaha

it was registered in NSW b4 so that wasnt a problem... but i would of liked to of inspected the car myself.... mneh.. awe well.
