This was a topic of debate in our house tonight
http://www.smh.com.au/national/austr...19-gl31n2.html What are your thoughts See heres the thing, I'm from Sydney and until I was in my late 20's I'd never set foot in VIC But for mine it's Potato Scallop Cossie's (my kids call them swimmers) Bubbler Sausage Sanga (Snag Sanga is an acceptable alternative) Nose Bleed (My kids just call it a bleeding nose) Canteen Pants General Store / Takeaway (my kids called it a local shop) Ice Block and not mentioned but I've come unstuck south of the boarder Kabab (delicious spinning log of meat shaved in to leb bread with lettus tomato onion, etc) A piece of fish (Beer battered fish from the takeaway shop) Mostly NSW centric but theres a few odd ones

Muslims are not allowed to eat pork but that does not mean they can't sell pork products to those of us who eat pork.

We moved from vic to WA 9 years ago, potato scallops here and when you ask for dim sims they throw them in batter then deep fry them, lots of different words here, a Pot of beer in vic is a middy or handle here, ask for a slab and people are dumbfounded, gotta ask for a carton of beer, strange critters these born and bred WA lot!

Potato cake. And when I say dim sim, I mean steamed, but only Vics do it that way...
Jam balls at the Vic markets are the best, as are the steamed dim sims served in brown paper bag with soy sauce slowly disintegrating the bag. And in Vic, a piece of fish usually means flake, which oddly is hardly served anywhere else.

Potato Cake is for Victorians.
Potato Scallop is for QLD'rs. I used to have a Victorian Lady work in the kitchen of the servo I worked at years ago, and someone asked for a Potato Cake, and guessed she was from Victoria as well. My dad called it a "Brush and Shovel" and I just called it the same even though until then I had never stepped into Victoria in my life. So when I asked for a "Brush and Shovel" my partner would shudder and look at me weird. I always wondered why.... Then one day My manager at work asked me if I had seen the "Brush and Shovel" I then asked why she called it that. She said it was because shes from Victoria. Thats when I realised thats the reason why my dad calls it "Brush and Shovel" And Not "Dustpan and Brush". Ive noticed a few other terms in the same spirit as this as well. Its like Victorians are simple, and "Dumb down" the description of an object to its simplest form. And that becomes the description of said object. No offence to Victorians, but you rarely see an item with a complicated description in Victoria thats only said in Victoria do you?

My point exactly Big Damo. Those people who say "its only a fish thing" seem to forget there are multiple meanings to "Cake" as there is "scallop"!!

Another here for brush and shovel - dustpan and brush sounds too English... not the language, but the snobby, turn your nose up at commoners type English, which is probably why Vics call it brush and shovel. Salt of the earth people, us Vics...
