Would you prefer a stock standard looking BF XT 5.4 V8 with 600rwhp, supercharged sleeper in a white colour with basic 17 inch ford wheels (stock alloys). A 10-11 second car, tough sounding mother..
Or do you prefer a BF Fairmont Ghia, beautiful leather interior, colour of your choice, wheels of your choice, any body kit, sound system of your choice but a stock I6 under the hood? (with underbonnet dress up) Are you about substance or style? horsepower or bling? Where do you generally spend your modding dollar? under the hood or bling? |

sleeper = win
or an unassuming fairmont with power, which is effectively the same thing.

For me HP is great but you can only use so much on the street without breaking speed limits and traction. There is also too much bling in my opinion too. Great to show your tastes but there are some jealous people out there and would rather see your ride with a key scratch down the side than you basking in admiration.
Cynical view point I know, but I have been the reciprocate of both ends and frankly I choose a little from column A and column B balancing it on tasteful but different from stock.

For a daily Im starting to get over wanting anything hardcore, just something nice, like a 300C or something. But for some fun on the weekend then obviously HP is the way to go. edit: mind you I love my little Alfa so power to weight and balance is also just as much fun as bulk HP

You left one thing out and its often missed as most care about 1/4 mile times. Suspension.
I'm 60% powa, 30% suspension and 10% looks my focus apart from black factory wheels looks like it did when I bought it.

To answer the OP - I'm a bit of a fence sitter. I love sleepers and cars that are unassuming. But for day to day, stock(er) cars are easier to live with. So - The Fairmont Ghia for me thru the week, and the sleeper when I want to surprise the 'backwards hat' brigade.

given an F6 for example, its already got ample of both. an XT on the other hand is missing both. likewise, the 300C is already a nice car, bit of go, bit of bling. my BA will likely go back to sleeper spec

I've probably spent as much on high end waxes, polishes and other car care products as I have with go fast mods, so 50/50 for me

The thing is with me, a stock car is like everyones elses, there is heaps of them that rolled off the factory floor, that is the reason I would rather change the wheels, or add tint, lower it, do this or that to suit my personal tastes.
We only mod things to make us feel more individualised and pseudo-unique otherwise we wouldn't bother. Call it an insecurity, a self expression or what ever you want, we all want to stand out in our own ways and be known as 'the guy with that car'.

Seems the older guys are more horsepower and the younger guys (p platers) are more bling.

i quite like the sleeper, but a bit of bling like a factory GT i also like, a magnificent souped up hotrod with a 50k paint job with chrome etc i like,
over the top/ricer ....i don`t like, ......... HP i like, though no longer actively chase it(cant afford it) :(, these factory fords make shed loads of power anyway!. |

50/50 split is fine, but it all comes down to what you need... No use having a 600kw plus falcon if your only going to work and dropping kids at school, in that senario, bling would win.

How many P Platers do you see with a Holden SV6 sedan or ute. Then they lower them and dress them up like a hsv, even put the quad exhaust on them to try and fool people. If you add the cost of the bling, they could have bought the real SS or the HSV....with the horsepower. How many younger guys buy a old bmw or honda euro to appear as if they are a big timer? wheels etc but no horsepower? Its the older guys that like more substance, they would rather have a cheap wallet full of cash than the young guy with his designer wallet but no money in it. |

Myself and my friends must be different to the norm then. We could care less about spending money on show. Much prefer the GO. It's why I waited until I got off my Ps to buy a decent car.

For me, if it is a streeter/cruiser then it is all show.
Where can you use the go on the streets these days? Most modern standard 6 cyl offerings more than cut the mustard on the usual day to day street light drags (never alone the great V8's and i6T with now have) with little or no modifications anyway, so you might as well have it lookin pretty imho. However if it was a drag/race car then HP will always come first, but there's nothing like it being well presented as well imho cause I never have been a fan of the rat rods or matt black look.
