Default Gas Bill

How do you think I will go with this:-

I got gas connected to my house last June, in the first month no bill. So I called and asked where it was, they told me they didn't have the gas meter id number and I had to get it and call them back and advise them the gas meter id number. I did that but I didn't call as I couldnt be bothered with their stupid automated telephone system so I emailed them the meter id number. I got a read receipt that they read the email.

I have never got a gas bill since June last year and recently they sent me a letter "to the home owner" asking for me to call.

I called them and they wanted my details so I gave them my name and they asked how long I had been living in the house for, I told them then they said they are going to send me a bill backdated till June.

How will i go with getting them to bill me from now as they have no record of me, they have nothing signed by me to tell them to connect the gas, they didn't even know my name. well not until now......

Yes Yes i know all about i should of called them and i am due to pay

But if they don't have a record of me or even know who i am or have anything signed by me to connect is there someway I can get around this....

Isn't there some law about if they wait over 12 months, then you can't be expected to pay for the whole year? I've waited 9 months for a bill - then copped a $450 bill for that period.

not law but it is general practice.... I had no phone calls on my telstra bills for 2 years, then 1 bill came in for the most recent 12 months (ended up paying most of that) and the next bill was for the first 12 months. A quick call to the tio to reconfirm my rights and telstra then waived that bill.

This happened when I went on to a telstra official service which meant no rental, 300 local call credits etc, so bills of $0.00 seemed perfectly acceptable. The only clue was no itemised calls. I followed it up after the first 2 bills then gave up as I was assured everything was correct.

When I moved into our new house 7 years ago we didn't get a gas bill for ages .. about five months, I hadn't had gas before and didn't know the bill cycle. so, I did the right thing and rang them up. they got up me for not telling them I had moved in!! I said the Electricity nad water mobs didn't have to be informed and billed me ok. Anyway a couple months latter I got the bill and it was for only about eight dollars plus service fee. The brand new metter wasn't ticking over, FREE gas for seven months. I rang them up and they replaced the meter next day. Sometimes you win!!

Last year, my energy company rang me up on a Thursday evening. They said I had 7 days to pay my bill or else I'd have to be disconnected then pay 77 bucks to be reconnected. They gobbed on for about 20 minutes telling me my rights and such and what I had to do.

After 20 minutes of that crap, they said "So.. do you understand?" I said "Yup, perfectly. Just one thing... how about you actually send me a bill first ey?" They tried to argue about how they had sent one and then not to worry I had 7 days so if they sent it on Monday, I'd have time still. I told them... "Yeah that would be great, but I leave to NZ on Monday." blah blah.. they tried to put the onus on my saying that I had no choice but to pay the 77 bucks, I told them that if I ever see 77 bucks on my bill, I would take them to court and take them on.

End result, I paid my bill after coming back from NZ a month later.
