Laws regarding frayed seatbelts...

G'day all.

My AU3 Futura drivers belt is starting to fray. What is the law on this. Do i NEED to get it replaced? Can I replace it with a good condition, second hand one?

Yes it has to be replaced and yes you can use an undamaged used one but there are risks in doing so (are you sure it is undamaged).

Never never buy second hand seat belts.
You can't be sure it hasn't been in a crash, and if it has, it could be stretched and could break if you install it and are involved in an crash.

just do the good ol trick of burning the frayed bits off with a cig lighter ( if its onlylight fraying on the edges that is) , mechanics have been doing it for years to pass RWC

Exactly what I was going to suggest as long as it's not actually torn/ripped and it;'s just the material "pilling".

You can get brand new Klippan ones for reasonable money, and you can even choose what colour you want (black/grey/red/yellow/blue). Autopro and autobarn sell them, but it's usually something you will need to order.

I need new seatbelts. Nothing wrong with the belts themselves, I have got a full black interior and grey seatbelts.

if you had to go and get a roady for what ever reason you will need to get new/second hand ones

me personally i would only buy new

i could not imagine what i would feel if it was one of my kids that received a shitty s/hand one and it failed

dont risk it just get new and you will be able to rest a bit easier

No worries. Give them a call - they are very helpful people. I have used them twice before - once for new belts for my old XE, and more recently for extension straps for the seat belt buckles for use with a child booster seat.

Frayed seatbelts make the vehicle defective and thus unroadworthy. Best to replace for safety sake also!!

You can use 2nd hand belts, even if they have been in an accident. You can't use them under any circumstance if at the base of the belt the tag has come out that says "If any part of this tag is visible you must replace the seat belt". That is a safety device to indicate the belt has stretched.

You can use s/h seatbelts in ACT, I thought they had to be new in NSW though. Try Ford Spares in Maryborough St Fyshwick.

As soon as there is any fraying it affects the strength of the belt detramentally. I personally would never buy any secondhand safety restraint. What price do you place on your personal safety? Go new, I would.
