What Is Ford Testing With This Mysterious Crossover Prototype?
Is this the new EcoSport? Or a Focus-based SUV?

By: Anthony Karr, Editor

https://www.motor1.com/news/300182/f...ototype-spied/

ord is planning a major SUV and crossover offensive for the next few years. The Blue Oval will launch a couple of brand new models, including an entire Bronco family, as well as refreshed variants of already existing cars. One of the many new vehicles has been spied recently during tests on public roads in Germany and we are quite surprised by what we are seeing so far.

The attached gallery below depicts a compact crossover (or even a raised hatchback) that’s bigger than today’s EcoSport but smaller than the current Escape/Kuga duo. It’s roughly the same size as the new Focus hatchback but is significantly raised and has a more pronounced crossover appearance. What is it? No one really knows at this very early stage of development, but there are a number of possible options.

First, according to some reports, this could be our very first look at the next-generation EcoSport. It’s rumored to become a bigger and much more comfortable model to meet the expectations of customers in the United States and in markets like Germany and the United Kingdom.

Interestingly, this trial car has five lug nuts per wheel which makes us believe it’s based on the platform of the new Focus rather than on the Fiesta. If that’s the case indeed, the new EcoSport could be a significantly more refined and technologically advanced crossover than the one that’s on sale today. Bear in mind that five lug nuts doesn’t necessarily mean the architecture comes from the Focus and the underpinnings could be sourced from the smaller Fiesta instead.

It's a Fiesta based SUV to replace the Ecosport.

Thaty are wrong, it's not Fiesta based as it has five lug wheels and look to be Focus sized
new intel suggests that this is replacement for C-Max, so maybe hybrid but to be built in Romania

Well, that is the body of a Fiesta, not a Focus. The number of lug nuts could simply point to different wheel mounts since the SUV is on stilts.

So why the camouflage?

Is it to get publicity about a new up and coming model?

"Gee look at that car, I'd better take a pic and send it to the papers."

If they painted the cars white and drove them around no one would notice.

They want the papparazzi to take photos and talk about what the vehicles could be
without showing too much, it's a great way of advertising through social media.

Now people are asking what this new compact could be which is all good for Ford.

I suspect it is the EcoSport replacement. The body is completely different to the Fiesta's ...even though it does look similar.

Spy photography is a funny old business, it creates interest in upcoming new vehicles from the public & then there are interested parties who just like to doodle all over them.

Thought it was a CX-3 from the rear.

These days these things are not really crossovers, they are just a normal car that has suspension high enough so you don't scrape the front bumper or your towbar on driveways as often.
