When you are selling a car they send you a text asking for your lowest price or some bs excuse to get you to reply directly to their g mail, email, hotmail account etc and in doing so they end up getting all your details and doing you over by robbing your accounts etc,im not sure how they do it but gumtree warns you about them because many people have been fleeced by scammers.
I wish i knew how these guys worked because id get my own back and send a virus from hell to eat their computer,if i knew how.

Lesson one, opening an email never harmed anyone. Just never click any links from unknown sources, even if it has an email address, type it in yourself.

Never use any form of hyperlink in an sms/email etc etc, thats the way they get a hold of your information, they have fake pages that look identical to your email login, always check it says https before ever entering any secured data.

what they do, is send you money from a stolen paypal account, but overpay you and ask you to pay the freight company collecting the car when they turn up hence the reason for over payment.

Now car is gone, paypal have suspended taken the money back and you paid money to someone to take your car away from your own pocket.

thats the basics of most the scams.

Most of these are overseas scammers. They don't want the car you're selling, that'd be traceable and too difficult. They want you to give them money via bs PayPal invoices.

Or they are selling a non existent bargain priced car and sell it to multiple buyers at once. Each buyer deposits money or pays via PayPal.

I tried to sell my ambo on Gumtree, paid $65 for the premium ad and only got scammers.

Paid $130 on carsales and it sold pretty quickly.

Don't even bother with gumtree for selling cars, do it properly with carsales.

If Im paying for an ad, I'd use carsales. If I want to skimp out an ad fee because Im a tight *** then I'll use gumtree. But I gotta be aware of the scammers. That said, carsales does have a few scammers still but less of them.

Car I sold on gumtree went to the first bloke that made contact.
Car was gone in around 45 minutes after the ad was placed.

They always use "my agent will collect the goods tomorrow" etc, in the few weeks I sold my motorcycle, I had around 10 texts saying similar crap.

Or you just cop the "whats your lowest price"
Don't think Id ever use gumtree again to be honest

Those scammers won't pick up the car. They want you to pay for 'shipping' the car after they send you a dodgy western union receipt. That's it, you don't lose the car.2

I have my car advertised on carsales and gumtree, despite the dodgy people on gumtree its where ive sold 90% of my cars over the years, carsales i have only sold one so far.
When you dont want to give your car away you need patience for the right buyer to come along, especially when you know its the cheapest available!

The last few scammers that have contacted me, I sent them a reply accepting their offer and said that the car is available from my place of work. I told them that the car can be collected from "The Australian Federal Police Internet Crime and Fraud Division, State Circle Canberra ACT. Go to the back dock and ask for Chief Inspector Smith and that you are here to collect the car. 2 very large policemen will be their to ensure the transaction goes smoothly.

Strangely enough, I never get a reply and no further communication.

It happens on Carsales too, I had an 'Australian living in Malaysia' wanting to buy my XR8, was suspicious as soon as he said he'd pay the asking price, and asked for a paypal transaction.
Scamming laws need to be toughened up.
