I have an XR8, but I would have to say that the XR6 Turbo is the best bang for buck performance car in this country, and with the addition of a flash tuner maybe the world.

How reliable are they though? Are the xr8's a better more reliable car?

I guess theres less to go wrong with the six and its based on a proven design. But I wouldn't say one is particularly more reliable than the other.

Typhoon hands down. Most torque of any Aussie built car (Not including E-Series HSVs), and it's a 6. :

Also one sexy beast too.

Id love to have a typhoon but I would want enjoy every killowatt. They look good. However how tough are they? Can they take punishment and 4 hours normal driving a day or will they just choke up and need a tow home? If the turbo blows can it be driven home?

I haven't driven one but the Typhoon sounds like a quick car and cheap to mod.
For V8's you can't look past the 5.6L Windsor in the T-Series.

What would be more cost effective to repair? A blown up xr8 or ts engine or turbo six engine?

stav I sense you have reservations regarding the reliability of fords Turbo 6. Turbo failures are very, very rare. Just like anything, if proper maintanence is neglected they will suffer. The turbo unit itself is rather large and unstressed in its application.

As for the engine internals, the later model you get the stronger internals it will have.

I can assure you they CAN take alot of punishment.

What my goal here is to find a ford which has great bang for buck and wont leave me empty pocketted..or is there no such thing? Each non performance ford I have owned seems to need 2 -3 spare gearboxes to keep them going for example.

with the BABF's it isn't the engines that are break bank expensive per say, it is the driveline issues that are the niggling killer imho.. Wait till you see BA/BF rack up the 100 000 kays and tell me they are still a nice car to drive, reguardless of the power :(

You thrash anything Stav and it'll give up eventually. The 6 may blow a turbo but if the 8 chucks a rod you won't be going far.
Personally I like my XR8 and for me it's the best performance ford although it isn't the quickest.

We're talking unmodified production Ford right?

Quickest is the Typhoon. Objectively it is probably the best car Ford Oz have ever built.

However, after having driven a couple of Typhoons (as well as a few very fast turbo 6s) I have to say the best driver's car is still the T3. Now call me biased if you like but the facts are that-;

1. the T3 is only a poofteenth slower in a straight line from a standing start. However from roll-on at almost any speed in identical gears (allowing that the T3 has only 5 against the T6 six-speeds) the Windsor turns the tables in response for at least the first 50 to 100m, then it is neck and neck.

2. the T3 also feels (and IS) better stuck to the road. I have mates who cannot get their XR6Ts or Typhoons around Wakefield within a full second of the T3.

PS. Nope, I didn't include any BOSS engined car in my comparison. In fairness their straight-line performance is equal to the T3, but their handling puts them well behind the Typhoon and therefore WAY behind the T3.

Personally i feel the same, The XR8 has a "Feeling" about it that i love it's has the Power on demand, Exhaust note and handles quite well for it's weight.

It does everything i ask of it quite well and any area that it comes up short in are fixable.

Although in saying that, for Value for money the Turbo 4.0L is hard to go past, but my vote still goes to the Big Boss.

I probably will thrash the crap out of it. My wagon is i for repairs at the moment and went to work with the wifes camry. The performance felt like limp home mode on the wagon..maybe I thrashed that to keep up.

I dunno ..if I spent 50k for a typhoon you would think I want 50 k of performance out of the thing right down to the last bolt.

Ive seen the mitsubishi evos and they seem alot tougher..but too small for a bloke like myself. Is it just a case that I should stick to older cars with plenty of parts and keep repairing modifying till my dying days or is the typhoon the car that can take it?

Maybe daily driven cars were never meant to be performance cars as they break? Perhaps I have become too addicted to torque and need to buy an eb from the auctions for 50 ,a trailer and have a car just for wsid ? Maybe this will calm my inner emptiness of speed ? If the eb breaks..well I jus tow it home lol..
