Interesting. So it is only in Aus where Ford doesn't perform well.

there's nothing wrong with the Euro Fords. IMO they suffer here from an image problem, compounded by the fact that we don't get the good spec ones that they do in the UK.

Petrol is ungodly expensive in the UK, most of their cars are smaller-engined versions of cars we have here. My uncle has a Hyundai Getz, it's got a really small engine though, 1.2 or 1.4 litre. Doesn't really make much of a difference, the roads are so crowded you don't really need more than the first two gears

Ford is well respected in the UK (and much of Europe) for delivering decent cars.
Focus, Fiesta and Mondeo are considered the benchmarks for their respective categories.

I'm surprised the Corsa is so high. Some sort of discounting going on, perhaps?

And very different perception on what is needed size wise... A Golf is a family car over there.

Last week we had an old work friend from Scotland drop in to say hi while on their first Australian holiday and he fell in love with my little white Beemer.

Parked in the garage next to it was the XY and he asked what it was and how many litres the engine was.

When I said 5.8 he kept saying to his wife that car over there is 5.8 litres what a monster.

I didn’t want to give him a heart attack and show him what was in the other garage.

Ford (along with Skoda) generally make the best quality and most reliable cars of all the European-manufactured brands. They have a very good reputation there. It's a pity we don't get all the European-model Fords from Europe rather than Thailand.

Meanwhile, at Ford HQ:

Yes, I want a Fiesta that can tow my caravan, trailer, and do 2000kilometer trips interstate.
In comfort.

OK, looks like some people are missing the point of 'top selling'. It doesn't necessarily have to be the best cars out there, just what is selling the most to the masses.

Since when was a Fiesta the only choice to tow a caravan?

Read Sprintys post.
Also because we are losing Falcon and Commodore which suit the task ideally.

Only problem here is, you're wrong.

1) all those cars are global cars so UK, Europe, Asia, US, NZ and AU get them. If AU was LHD compliant I am sure there would be more we'd get.

2) They're not the only passenger vehicles available, Everest, Kuga, Mustang and soon to be Edge.

The Asians are quite small in the European market. Hyundai/Kia is the biggest of them followed by Toyota. The market is dominated by the VAG group, followed a fair way behind by PSA, Renault, Ford, Opel, BMW, FCA and Daimler (Merc) in that general order. Only below this do the Asians make an appearance.

Using 214 figures for aust.
Our best sellers were corolla and mazda3 at 43K plus change, which would put them about 9 in UK. (Uk figured to beginning of dec)
Also means they sell more corollas and mazdas in aust than in uk

You could also categorise the dual cabs dominating sales here as bland and slow. But dual cabs are what the public want here and So too are hatchbacks in Europe. Most top sellers in fact are bland. Whenever something is styled anything close to daring, it risks upsetting the makrket.

Here is a look at Oz top 10 for 2015 from one source others may tell a different story, hatchbacks, utes, 4dr sedan not all the same car with a different badge, jeez we even like RWD and 4wd. If I had to from that list probably a commodore SS would do me fine and take the boring beige out of my drive. Life is too short to drive boring cars.

VW Golf
Mazda CX-5
Camry
Mitsu Triton
Ranger
Commodore
Hyundai I30
Hilux
Mazda 3
Corolla

They also had the sense to keep manufacturing alive in their country.
The majority of the population are not driving enthusiasts so it kind of makes sense. No one is forcing anyone to buy a top 10 selling car.

Also it would be a lot easier for the UK to keep making cars since they have 3 times out population. Plus there are another 700,000,000 people close by n their continent.
