The Mondeo wagon in NZ comes with 215/55 tyres on 16" steel wheels as standard. As the wheel trims are seriously ugly, I'd like to fit a set of alloy wheels. I can of course just buy a set of 16" wheels and swap the standard tyres over (Goodyear Excellence), but I'm sure the car would look and handle better on 18" wheels and decent tyres.
But based on some comments in a couple of road tests in NZ, the best ride / handling setup on the Mondeo may be with the 16" wheels. So I'm not sure whether to go for the 18s, especially as this will cost more. Can I get some feedback from you on the merits and drawbacks of the larger wheels, especially the 18s? Another concern is how much noisier it would be on the coarse chip seal that is used on far too many main highways in NZ.
