Default Arms hanging out of windows

Have seen more and more drivers lately (lots actually) driving along with their arms hanging completely out of windows. This was highlighted this afternoon when driving over the Westgate bridge with its narrow lanes, a guy was cruising down the bridge in heavy traffic with his arm hanging down from the window, ready for another car to drift over and into it (remembering there was a thread recently on cars tending to drift into other lanes).

Besides being illegal, how stupid is this practice? I'm sure our members here have more sense.

Probably part of the current trend of driving while in a daydream, you're safe as long as you're under the speed limit. Oh yes, and in a car that is much safer as it has curtain airbags.

I don't have an issue with it if you're cruising along a country road on a hot day, in a car without air conditioning as I have done a few times before. But in city traffic or anywhere that your arm could easily be crushed by a careless driver, it makes me cringe. These days I just keep the windows closed all the time and crank up the A/C.

I always do this, see nothing wrong with it. I'm aware of other cars around me so if one gets too close I pull my arm in a bit. On a warm day there's nothing better...

My arm doesn't stick out firther than my mirrors on the rare occasion I do it.

I've never had anyone clip my mirrors so I don't see why this would be an issue. The main risk would be in the event of a crash you arm would be basically the first thing to be chopped off or if lucky crushed to smitherines.

I have my arm out the window a lot of the time? Didn't really think I was being an idiot while tapping the door like a drum or stumming the window sill to a good song on a nice day. Sure, I may one day have a car ram into me, but atleast I won't get glass in my eye from the window smashing.

I hate seeing people in nice clean, decent cars doing it, I cringe at the thought of the fingerprints and marks they are putting all over the door....but that's just me haha.

The closest I come to it is the elbow resting on the trim and hand on the steering wheel.

What's wrong with placing an arm out the window to allow a little fresh air evaporate the sweat from the underarms? Na, I generally notice it's the cap backward brigade driving their vehicles with the arms extended down the door to leave some DNA on their rubbish paint job!

C'mon guys!

There's easily 5kw's with the ol' arm-out-the-window trick.

I couple that, with a boostcruising sticker, which also gives a large rwkw increase, and i'm keeping up with F6's lol..

;)

Yeah that's how I have mine too, thought that was what was meant. Having your arm 'hang' down the door isn't even comfortable, and yeah looks dumb.

When you say though, they look stupid, does it matter how they look? Are they actually doing attempting to seek your approval for how they look? For instance, a HSV lover would say we look stupid in a Ford. Or a V8 lover would say you look stupid in a XR6... I dont believe you purchased an XR6 to impress the croud like I didnt purchase a V8 to make friends... TBH, this seems like more of a moan session then anything else... Build a bridge I say. Move along.

Being the first body part to be ripped off in an accident I am all in favour of anything that will further raise the already high cost of medical trauma in road accidents, tie up the hospital system and raise our insurance premiums. More body parts should be extended out windows. The head would be a good one to start with.

There was a write up in the local paper the other week about this. In it there was a story of a guy that had lost the use of his arm because a motor bike rider hit his arm while riding through stopped traffic. It smashed his elbow & did alot of permenant damage.

Ive occasionaly rested my arm on the window sill but found it uncomfortable to have my whole arm haning out the window while driving, so ive never really done it.

My cousin was told by a cop to put his arm inside the car or he will be in trouble. Btw he was stopped at the lights and was only resting it on the sill. It wasnt hanging out like OP describing. Bit over the top really.

I am more of a fan of the "Air dragon"

Where you use the air speed to make your hand go up and down (fly). Nothing better on a hot summers night.

toughens your up when hitting a big bug at 110kmph

I don't do it. I find it too hard to text on my phone, turn the newspaper pages, scroll through my ipad playlists, adjust the GPS and drink a cup of hot coffee without using both hands, while steering with my knees.
