Default Did I do something stupid or not? '66galaxie with GTHO motor

So I went to a deceased estate clearing sale, many many old ford holden chev wrecks/projects etc. near the end of the sale after a few of the more expensive cars went up for sale, I'd nearly lost interest because the couple i was interested in went for too much. Then a '66 ford galaxie with a gt (ho?) motor came up, with ref numbers (have them somewhere) I half jokingly started the bidding at $2000- it was in ok nick, mostly paint and TLC needed. I expected it to go for heaps but I had it until basically the final call and someone got it for 2500. I chickened but also a bit surprised so i didn't continue bidding. Will I kick myself forever now?? I suspect I am about to be flamed now, but don't be too cruel to me! It wasn't that i didn't have the money, I just had no idea what it was really worth, and I don't really have anywhere to put it that it deserves. And i've never done anything like that before.

A GT motor isn't worth much by itself (ie $2500) without the corresponding body shell!

No need to kick yourself mate. Rest easy. Sleep at night. Refrain from kicking the dog.

Interesting.
But the golden rule of bidding at auctions is to thoroughly research the offerings and their values first.

Not much chance of that body being alive still Morris

If it is, I will wait for it to turn up in my driveway with Elvis behind the wheel and Michael Jackson to pop out the passenger side doing the moonwalk!

dont feel too bad mate.....
i was there to . if you were just buying it because of the engine then you probably didn`t miss out too much. going by the engine number (GK3164C ) i think the block originally came out of a falcon 500 station wagon. they had addvertised it as a GTHO engine for a start then decided it was just supposed to be built to GT specs.

ended up selling for $2500. was probably a fair price for a project car with good running gear.

i think that they might have shot themselves in the foot a bit by pushing the GT tag then discovering it was just a galaxie with a clevo. if they had just tried to to sell it for what it was they might have done better.

So were many in reasonable nic? I noticed only a few stated suit resto and wondered who made the assessment. Saw an XW PV I was interested in but never made it there.

there were some good project cars there. there was also some rusty messes. some of the descriptions were a bit off the mark.

XW van was tired but could be revived. had a fair bit of rust but after seeing what some guys are doing in the project sections here it wasn`t that bad. had lots of XW -XY parts in the back, and it had a windsor in it. originally a six. sold for $800.

a lot of it went to the same buyer (# 20) . rumors were that he is an Ebay dealer so there will probably be a lot of parts coming up for sale soon.

That Fairlane would be an awesome project car. Dump 20 into it and have a car like the classic fairlane in the movie Ford Fairlane.

the yellow F100 in the pics sold for $900. looked a bit scruby but really wasn`t that bad. it had a a set of mini lite style mags that would have looked good on my old willys.also had a galv body so not much rust.

another old one about the same model but no running gear went for $400.

My dad wrote off a gtho. the motor from that ended up in a white xa/b/c ute. the motor aint worth much unless the matching shell is getting around.

Nice pic's, thanks for posting them.

Were these cars situated in the paddock as is or were they put there for the auction? Did they really all belong to one guy?

They were put there for the auction, originally spread around his main yard.
All the one bloke, still 100 odd tractors and crawlers to go.
