Default Car insurance at motorsport event

What do members do in regard to insuring their vehicles when they do track days or drag racing?

I would assume none of the mainstream car insurance companies offer any kind of cover for these events?

Is there a practical option for very occasional use - say 2-4 times a year?

Do people just self insure - Ie. be careful and hope nobody else takes you out?

I am comfortable with the risk at the drags for the most part, but what happens at a track if someone takes you out? If they have no insurance and are broke could you end up with a situation where you have to take them to court and they then end up paying you back over 10 years?

No insurance no blame, your car gets bent you pay to fix it.

Someone puts you in the wall and your car is a write off, bad luck for you.....that's racing.

If you can't afford to lose your car don't race it.

Even if the other party does have insurance, no company's normal policies will cover damage caused by motorsport.

There are companies that specialise in motorsport insurance, OAMPS and the like, just type motorsport insurance into google and you'll get them all.

You can buy insurance for the race track, I think Shannons do it, if not they might be able to help you

Everyone knows that normal car insurance does not cover you on a racetrack so stop posting that info, the OP already knows that

Yeah, that's what I meant by no insurance, that they were not insured whilst at the track.

I have had a bit of a google around, but many of the products available seem to be more around transport to events and against theft and damage in storage etc and stop once you get to the start line. Seem to be more for dedicated track cars as a substitute for regular car insurance rather than intended for street cars to be covered at the track.

Maybe I am wrong?

Does anyone on here insure their road car on track days?

Thanks for the reply

Who are you and what the heck is your problem?

The last paragraph of the OP made it unclear, so I said it in no uncertain terms.

With the amount of people doing track days in their road cars, someone must be providing an insurance policy to cover them. It would not be like the insurance industry to leave an untapped source of income alone.

Yeah, correct. Thought the same, but would not like to be shopping for an xd or something to put my 5.0 in after writting the GT off (as much of a weapon as it would be)

Doesn't matter how careful you are if some drifter wannabe cleans you up it would be tears before bedtime.

I am prepared to accept the risk of 400m, but the track seems a bit more risky.

Would really love to get onto the track but :(

Thanks, but no cigar.

Just rang Shannons. They can't offer cover regardless of whether one is an existing policy holder or not.

All they can cover is everything up until when you enter the grounds of the event.

The only option he knew of was using a broker to get offshore insurance from Loyds of London or the like.

Sounds expensive!

:(

For what it's worth, it may be worthwhile asking your insurer whether they consider non timed/non competitive track activities as driver training/advancement, and if coverage can be offered to suit an agreement of off street conditions.

While not entirely similar to 4 wheel tin-tops, I had my Yamaha R1 insured with Swann years ago because they offered certain conditions related to off road activities.
I participated in a cornering school at Phillip island and my bike had a light side to side roll. $10,500 worth of repairs which was mainly plastics and ancillaries and i had my bike back good as new. All paid for by insurer, $500 excess.

shannons used to have somethin where you told them what you were doing and you paid X amount to be covered. Although i think for that you also had to belong to a club sponsored by shannons

Shannons will cover pre 48 on the drag strip and I beleived it was an option for later cars but not standard as it is with pre 48

The did say that, yes. Probably should have said so too for the benefit of anyone that falls into this category.

I think they said it had to be over 65 years old, and also part of a club. The phone sales guy from Shannons knew nothing that would cover anything newer though.

Think the phone operator from RACQ is still laughing at me. I know they are conservative, but no need for that lady.

Thanks for the idea but

Wanted to go to Lakeside on Sunday. Might just watch I think

If it's just a track day and you only need a civil license it will probably be only one car at a time on the track.

but yeah, true that.

I think this type of cover is more for track/weekend cars that don't have regular insurance and/or rego.
