Sorry no not the F6
Whose seen the latest Topgear (Season 10 Episode 3)? Was a great show that had some very funny scenes in it (Clarkson in that midget car was a crackup!). The race between the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Bugatti Veyron was pretty cool. On that note I think the Turbo 6 FPVs (excluding the new F6X) were named after the Typhoon and Tornado fighter planes weren't they? The Tornado being on the left with the Typhoon in the middle. |

I'm not sure how they came up with the names, but I would imagine it was a weather thing.
Category Five, which I think they refer to as an F1 to F5 Hurricane. I thought FPV's logic was to call it the F6 (Forced 6) Tornado and Typhoon. But then again, I'm only guessing.

That was an awesome segment. That's why I can't watch 5th Gear. Top Gear is just entertainment plus with the most outlandish and often goofy challenges that fascinates you from start to finish.
Clarkson in that 3 wheeled car driving around the BBC offices, hillarious... then when a guy picks him up and turns him round in the opposite direction! |

Yeh, I'm pretty sure the "F6" designation was inspired by the fighter jets of today...eg F16, F15 etc.
The Brits also had the legendary Hawker Typhoon of WW2 and the Tempest which replaced it. In that picture, the fighter on the right is the Russian SU-35...that thing can turn circles around any fighter on the planet...including the F22.

The F6 comes from "forced induction" and the number of cylinders. The typhoon and tornado are fast rotary winds and are a metaphor for the action of the turbocharger. This is what was explained by Happy Jack at one of the functions around the time of the original F6 concept vehicle demonstration. |

And what do we get lumped with the replace the good old F111's ? Bloody POS F-18 Super Hornet. You know if they have to add 'super' to something that it's gonna be a disappointment. This one is on the ground where RAAF planes spend most of their time.

F111s are WAY overweight, and are pretty much antique's, Super Hornets are bloody awsome, they out manouver F111s, out fly (stabability wise, general flying, and combat), and theyre MUCH more up to date. would you go to war without the tools to keep in with a good fight? i think not.... |

While I always feel unhappy debating with an X-series owner (due to their usually impeccable taste)....
I AM serious !!! I'm not arguing the F111 hasn't had its day - far from it. Just that we could have gone with better options from Europe but elected to purchase from the US for reasons mostly related to "keeping them happy" rather than addressing our true requirements. (in my opinion) The Super thingy may be a good aircraft, but not necessarily what we need. and as for the Joint Strike Fighter (the Super Hornets have been purchased only to fill a gap until when the JSF gets delivered - if ever!) what a waste of $$$$$. The Four Corners report is very interesting and can be found here (the full report is available in various video downloadable formats) http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/conte...7/s2070484.htm Oh and I wonder if we can get a "dump and burn kit" retrofitted ? Whatever will event organisers do now ? I'm not going to riverfire if all it is bloody fireworks.

Back on topic, I thought it was a great race - the result was closer than I was expecting considering how fast a Typhoon can fly.

I thought it was a long way from being close - when they showed the car & plane turning at about the same time, the plane had it in the bag easily
