Ticking noise from passenger inner guard

Hey, I have an auIII xr8 ute, and since I bought it there's always been a ticking noise coming from the front driver side.. I finally took a couple mins too track the noise down and it's coming from the passenger side in front of the tire behind the plastic inner guard.. I pulled part of the gaurd off (dam plastic clips wouldn't come out) and seen something behind there, there's pipes or something leading to it.. I have no idea what it is but the noise is really annoying hahaha can anyone tell me what it is so I can fix it?!!

Live with it - it's the purge solenoid on the carbon canister and people have tried and tried and tried ...

I got an old flat wool car wash sponge and wrapped it around then secured it with a some electrical tape, going over it a few times to help deaden the noise. Haven't heard it since.

I've had an EA2, EL and AU3, and I've never noticed the ticking, let alone be annoyed by it... it's that loud that you can hear it over the engine? The only time I was even aware of anything tucked into there was when I hit a wombat, and the impact disconnected one of the air lines leading to the canister. SsSsSsssSsss...

Haha so it's a common problem then? What's the solenoid actually do? And if you replaced it would it fix it?? Not overly fussed but kinda makes my ute sound like something is wrong with it..

And yeah you can hear it very easily over the engine, not so much inside the cabin but def outside..

It removes the fuel smell from the cabin from memory, something like that anyway.

look, the above comments are right AND wrong. You dont have to live with it, and the noise can be eliminated

firstly pull the plastic splash guard away from the solenoid and see if the noise dissapears or quietens down alot. If so, then find a way to pull the solenoid away from touching anything, like zip ties etc.

but if its the case like in my car where the solenoid was buggered & ticking LOUDLY even though nothing was in contact with , go to ford and pay the $120 asking price for a new one. It comes with new hoses connected which are very easy to route and fit into the engine bay.

I tried the wrapping up with a sponge method and that didnt work at all......... if anything made the sound resonate louder

yeh its loud and embarrasing, sounds like theres something wrong with the engine. Got some insulating stuff from clark rubber that im going to try

$150 isn't too bad, I got a good friend who works at ford so might get him too get me one and save a bit of coin.. I dunno how people can put up with it haha

People put up with it a lot easier than putting up with spending over $100 to replace it only to have the brand new one do exactly the same after 6 months or less. All depends how deep your wallet is I s'pose.

The carbon canister holds fuel impregnated vapour that is present in your fuel tank - when the engine temp is normal, the ECU opens the solenoid to allow this vapour to pass through the engine under vacuum via the manifold and thus be burnt. It is to stop "emissions" that would be harmful to the dolphins.

Just wrap an old wrag or something around it and mummify it with duct tape. Had the same problem, did that and never heard it since.

So to bypass/remove it completely would make the EPA & thus your wallet unhappy?

yeah well i thought id give him some advice that no-one else was going to, because when mine was noisy as the clackers extensive searching on this forum turned up nothing other than wrapping it with a sponge which didnt work at all

only when i forked out for a new one the problem was fixed. That was about 7 months ago now ........ will let you know when it fails

this thread brings back memories lol the noise was always louder when in a enclosed environment or in the drive thru etc! used to drive me nuts, and almost every time i heard it i wouldn't remember what it was for about thirty seconds! and by then i was already stressing lol

Can't it just be bypassed the solenoid? And run the lines straight to manifold or airbox?

You could try - but I think the Ford ECU is cleverer than you may think. It will probably just log a fault code and shut down some part of the engine control ... hope it isn't the throttle LOL.

Wrapped a jumbo car wash sponge around mine with cable ties in '02. And because it was resting on the inner guard, the noise was amplified. So it's now elevated as well.
I have never heard it since. Not even with my ear on the guard. It's certainly a cheap fix that you could try first.
I remember back in '02 or '03' filling my car up at a servo beside another guy in a T2 TL50, his was ticking like crazy, it was really loud. So I said to him, "That ticking must really p*** you off". He replied with "What ticking?". He couldn't even hear it.
