Unhappy Is it true..I don't think so?

I was talking to a family friend the other day and he was saying how he knew a bloke that had 1 of 4 XR GT wagons made.. He said that the bloke brought it on parramatta road in sydney to do as a project until he discovered things that shouldnt be there such as the type of diff, gearbox and motor. He said the bloke thought that someone may have modified it earlier but instead contacted ford and gave them the numbers off the ID plates...It turned out to be 1 of 4 XR GT wagons made by ford.

Now don't get me wrong i like this bloke but i think this i a giant crock os $h!t

Is there such a car or not...i thought there was only the normal sedan gt in the XR range..

yer i see where your coming from alesia...They might of had options but i would not have a clue..Apparaently it had the gt running gear from the factory or sumthing like that..it had a hypo engine or something so he said...stuffed if i know

Only reason he brought it up is because he seen my 67 XR falcon 500 wagon sitting in the backyard.. (future restoration project when money builds up). haha

I seen some pics of your wagon on here...it looks awesome.

Its possible it was optioned with GT stuff if it was an execs car. I think the original designers (Bill Bourke I think was one, please correct me if im wrong but that name springs to mind) had special cars done.

I wouldnt call it a GT though!! Thats like calling an RPO83 a phase 4. Or thinking more modern, a fully optioned GT a GT-P. Well thats my opinion anyway.

Wasnt there some silver XR GT's made? So odd things do happen.

I don't think Ford was like Chrysler .. who were happy to take your money and build you just about anything .. like E37/E38/E49 sedans, wagons, utes and other oddities which escaped Tonsley Park ..

i was given an XA ute once , very very rusty, just because the guy wanted it out of his yard.

it had all gt stuff on it- all the front panels, dash, door trims, seats ,etc ,the only thing missing was the GT badges.
had been 351, toploader, 9" but the running gear was missing.

the guy reconded it had been a special order from ford and came with everything from the factory.????

long time ago now but i often still wonder it it was genuine or not.

P.S. i sold the complete XA GT front panel set , good grill, bonnet, gaurds had some rust in the bottom .........$100 the lot . :yeees:

As I recall for all the X series (I'm in my mid 50's) you could order a virtual custom build from Ford if you were willing to pay. This meant you could order a ute, van or wagon with all the GT bits including the stripes and GT badges. If such a van, ute, wagon is or isn't a GT is another question. You also get your GT bits on a sans stripes and plain coloured and ordinary Falcon 500 badged vehicle including Fairmonts.

In those days, when local shires in WA hired the road traffic cops and supplied their cars it wasn't uncommon for the local cops to run what looked like a plain vanilla Fairmont that was a GT underneath and if I recall rightly in one case that was featured in the newspapers a few times even an orange GTHO Fairmont. These cops were usually drove the one car, were the only cop in the town and their cars were often personalised or built to their individual requirements. Obviously such stealth cars caught more speeders, increased shire revenues, the cops commission or salaries and could be had with all the luxury bits including air taht made their office on the road more comfortable.

So it might be an original factory car. Is it really a GT ? The build plate might have the answer. GT spec utes were also popular with Tyre companies and the like as promotional vehicles.

There were no GT Wagons... or GT utes...... or GT Vans..... Just GT Sedans and Coupes.

And the unmarked cop car was born :Up_to_som

Isnt that how the XR GT started life anyway? It was the police specials and a big wig at Cambellfield thought hell Id buy that and the GT was born. They used the fairmont as a base and then added the cop running gear.

Cool RIPGMH, I thought I knew what I was talking about (doesn't happen much lol). I think I read the same thing in a history of Ford mag. It was Bill Bourke and someone else who thought up the GT.

4Vman, yeah the cop cars were only Falcons with the GT running gear. I was saying that the idea for the GT came from the Police specials. When they thought up the GT I thought they used Fairmonts.

Thats pretty much it. Ford built a pursuit model for the police and decided to use that running gear in a Fairmont spec car with gold paint and stripes and called it the GT.
