Question Toyota Fortuna/Forerunner in Australia?

Saw one of these parked up in West Perth just now:

At first I thought it was some Ssangyong thing but then I saw the familiar Hilux front on it and the Fortuna badge. I have seen these in Singapore but did not realise there were any here. Had a 3.0 TD in it judging from the badges. Wasn't some sort of company car or whatever, it had a baby capsule in the back.

These aren't marketed in Australia by Toyota directly are they?

Some Asian-market safety mirror for blind spots I think. Heaps of JDM cars have them.

Still uses a 4 speed auto. No decent 6cyl option available either.

Id hazard a guess and say its a personal import, judging by the foreign plates.

And with the grey import rules changing sometime ago, i don't think it would be a normal grey import. Could be wrong though.

Good looker, side and rear profile are reminiscent of Territory. Why can't we have this instead of Kluger, would make for a more reliable, durable alternative to Territory.

100% correct, would have had to jump through some hoops to get it here and Rego too.
Would be worth it compared to having a butt ugly Kluger tho.

So it's a Toyota Hilux Surf by any other name.

Don't know about the new ones, but the old Surf always suffered from the 'huge on the outside, tiny on the inside' thing.

Wikipedia says the Fortuna is indeed based on the HiLux frame, which the 4Runner hasnt been since going to the Prado frame for the 3rd gen.

There have been reports that Toyota are consideing bring the Fortuner in to Australia to fit under the Prado as a genuine 4x4. The Prado is heading up in to Land Cruiser pricing and there is a gap in Toyota's 4x4 wagon range. Note the Rav-4 and Kluga are SUV's so are in a different market segment, etc.
